Fun With Guitar
Wonder what it feels like to pick up a guitar
and actually make music? This class will teach
the basic beginner skills. Focus on how to play
the guitar for fun without reading music, while
learning the guitar’s components, correct fin-
ger positions, chord melody and strumming
techniques. Song selections will be made by the
instructor.
The class meets every Monday from 6-7:15
p.m. at Blackmon Community Center in Tem-
ple. The class is for kids ages 9-15. The cost is

Baby Contest and Pageant
Local babies, children, teens and young
adults are invited to participate in the Sun-
burst USA Beautiful Baby Contest at noon
Nov. 4 at Temple Mall. Participants can win
trophies, crowns, sashes and banners as well as
the chance to compete for a share of over $2
million in cash, bonds and prizes at the state
and international levels. Sunburst pageants will
be donating a portion of Fall pageant proceeds
to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey
relief fund.
The pageant is open to boys and girls, ages
infant to 3 years, and girls ages 4-27 years. The
Sunburst pageant is one of the only national
pageant systems to reward every participant
with a trophy.
Winners at the mall will receive their entry
fee paid into the Suburst Texas State Finals this
coming June. The pageant being held at the
mall is a preliminary to the Sunburst State and
International Finals.
At the Sunburst State Finals, to be held in
Houston, contestants compete for more than
$20,000 in cash and prizes and the chance to
advance to the International Finals in Atlanta,
GA, where over $2 million in savings bonds
and prizes will be awarded.

BELTON
Bell County Heart Walk
The 2017 Bell County Heart Walk, benefit-
ting the lifesaving work of the American Heart
Association, is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 14 at Con-
federate Park in Belton.
Hundreds of individual walkers and local
company and community teams will be tak-
ing steps to improve their heart health while
raising funds and awareness for the American
Heart Association in its fight against car-
diovascular diseases. This year’s Heart Walk
includes a family-friendly walk, CPR demon-
strations, live entertainment and more. Par-
ticipation is free and walkers who raise money
are eligible for prizes.
Heart Walks combine fitness with phi-
lanthropy. Each year, more than 1 million

Trailblazers Walking Challenge
Dust off those walking shoes and take the
challenge to hit 21 of Temple’s beautiful trails
in 21 days during for the Mayor’s Fitness
Council’s 8th annual Temple Trail Blazers
Walking Challenge. This is a free event that is
fun for the whole family.
Participants will meet at West Temple Park
for a kickoff event starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Each participant will receive a trails map, log
sheet and T-shirt. Participants will keep a log
of the trails they walk and receive points which
will enter them into a raffle to win prizes (val-
ued up to $150).
Awards and prizes will be given away at the
Trail Blazers Challenge Completion Ceremony
held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Sammons Com-
munity Center. Prizes will be awarded in each
of the 10 age group categories.

Volunteer drivers needed
The Central Texas Veterans Health Care Sys-
tem is seeking volunteer van drivers interested
in transporting veterans in the Killeen area to
and from their scheduled appointments at the
Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center in
Temple.
Transportation for veterans from outlying
areas, such as Killeen, is provided through a
van fleet donated in collaboration with area
Disabled American Veterans organizations and
its members.
Volunteers must meet qualifications for driv-
ers, such as a valid driver’s license, proof of
current insurance, a safe driving record and a
background check. Applicants must also pass
a physical examination. Volunteers are eligible
for meals, flu shots and an extensive volunteer
recognition program.
