Nature in Lights illuminates the five-and-a-half mile drive with Belton Lake as the backdrop. The displays transform BLORA into a winter wonderland,
nightly, 5:30 -11 p.m. now through Jan. 5.

The gingerbread house along the driving path looks different in the day
versus at night. Nature in Lights features a wide variety of classic, iconic
holiday characters and themes.

“My favorite part of driving
through the display is the Tun-
nel of Lights because it surrounds
you,” said Johnathan Naples, a
9-year-old visitor. “I enjoy com-
ing out here with my family.”
“We’ve come to this event since
I was little, and we’ll keep com-
ing out to this event in years to
come,” Gonzales said.

As the holiday season approach-
es, Soldiers do not always have
the opportunity to take leave and
travel to see Family, which can
make the holidays a hardship
for some. But Fort Hood’s 17th
annual Nature in Lights holiday
display at Belton Lake Outdoor
Recreation Area brings cheer to
the area and breaks the monotony
of the mundane.
For Soldiers, the opportunity
to get out and do something out
of the ordinary is a great way
to spend the holidays and bring
back the Christmas spirit, said
Michael Aker, a yearly frequenter
of Nature in Lights.
Nature in Lights is hosted by
Fort Hood’s Family and Morale,
Welfare and Recreation director-
ate’s BLORA team. The display
features a wide variety of classic,
iconic holiday characters: rein-
deers, elves, angels and, of course,
Santa Claus.
The five-and-a-half mile drive
showcases more than 100 ani-
mated light displays with the lake
as a serene backdrop.
At the beginning of the drive
through the festive light display,
a sign that reads, “Nature in
Lights,” framed by poinsettias,
traditional Christmas flowering
plants that will last throughout
the Christmas season, both lit in
traditional holiday colors of red
and green, greets visitors.
Nature in Lights is not only
an area for Fort Hood Soldiers
to enjoy but also serves as a great
place to bring families in the sur-
rounding areas closer together.
“It’s a family tradition,” said
Jasmine Gonzales, a frequenter of
Nature in Lights.
“Just coming out with my kids
to this event helps bring my fam-
ily closer, and it’s better than just
sitting around at the house,” Aker
said.
Approximately half-way
through the Nature in Lights
drive is Santa’s Village. People
can get out of their vehicles; visit
several holiday-themed booths,
purchase holiday gifts, go for a
train ride, stop by a petting zoo
and take photos with Santa.

event is the peace it brings to
me,” Gonzales said.
“It’s relaxing and something we
can do as a family; we have been
coming every year for as long
as I can remember,” Aker said.
“It’s nice to get away from all the
hustle and bustle of town.”
Gonzales added, “It helps take
fast-paced world, the dis- your mind off of everything else -
Belton offers tranquility it’s soothing.”
Toward the end of the drive,
My favorite part of this whole visitors drive through the
500-foot-long “Tunnel of Lights.”
