from retired Gen. Peter Chiarelli,
Thomson said that “words whisper,
but actions thunder,” and those
honored at the ceremony epitomize
those words.
“They don’t talk the talk, rather
they walk the walk,” Thomson said.
“For that, we are a better commu-
nity.”
Dorian Rhoten Jr., 8, was recog-
nized as the First Army Division
West Volunteer of the Quarter for
volunteering his time in the com-
munity.
“I went to the nursing home and
played bingo with the (residents),
helped my dad call the numbers,”
he said, adding that he also partici-
pated in several clean-up projects.
“I just like helping,” Dorian said.
Volunteering runs in the Rho-
ten Family. Other members of the
Rhoten Family were recognized for
their volunteer efforts, making Staff
Sgt. Dorian Rhoten a proud father.
The father also spoke about his

said.
Jaime Colon was another hon-
oree who enjoys donating her time
within the community.
As president of the Comanche
Community Garden, Colon volun-
teered over 200 hours last quarter
to helping in the garden and teach-
ing others about gardening.
She started with the project two
years ago while looking for some-
thing to do with her then-2-year-
old.
“I needed to get him outside,”
Colon said.
Now, she oversees the garden and
loves the hands-on work and shar-
ing the plot with others.
“I just love having people come
out and teaching young minds,”
Colon said. “I love volunteering
and giving back to the commu-
nity.”
The next quarterly Hood Heroes
ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 7.
Nominations are due July 16.
