By Wylie Roberts
time of the year egg pro-
ducers are concerned about get-
ting their eggs to market in a
conditon of high quality. One ol
the best ways to sell eggs of high
quality is to use proper cage of
the eggs.
Here are some things that many
poultrymen are doing to keep the
quality and price of the eggs up
during the summer. Gathering
the eggs 3 or 4 times a day and
getting them into a cooler without
delay is a major step in keeping
the good quality. If you don’t
have a cooler, then market eggs
several times a week, preferably
once each day. - Another thing is
to keep the eggs clean. When
eggs must be washed it’s best to
have the water warmer than the
eggs and to use some type of de-
tergent-sanitizer to aid in clean 1
ing to prevent internal injury to
the quality.

Many kinds of insects and in-
sect-like pests damage lawns, but
this damage can be greatly reduc-
ed by proper use of available
chemicals.
Grubs of several kinds of
beetles feed on the roots of
grass, leaving bare spots where
plants have been killed by their
feeding. Others, such as sod
webworms and cutworms feed on
the leaves or stems. Still others,
such as chinch bugs, false chinch
bugs, Rhodesgrass scale and leaf-
hoppers suck juices from the
grass. Ants and earthworms dig
holes in lawns and throw up
mounds of earth, and ants may
invade the home from their nests
in the grass.
All of these pests can be con-
trolled, according to County Agent
Wylie Roberts, with insecticides
such as chlordane, DDT, aldrin,
dieldrin and heptachlor. For
quicker results chemicals should
be washed into the soil by water-
ing after application. Insectici-
des may be applied whenever de-
sired. Follow the application
rates on the container and ob-
serve all precautions on the label,

because insecticides are poisons.
The problem of moles in the
lawn is related to insect problems
since moles invade lawns and
build tunnels in search of worms
and grubs. So, controlling insects
may help control the moles as
well.
