each game the Eagles are getting
in better shape while gaining
valuable experience.
Adam Wright is kicking, punt-
ing, and passing very well. He
has connected on field goals of
49,42, 39, and 35 yards. Punt-
ing, he averaged almost 47 yards
a kick against Whitehouse. At
the quarterback position, Wright
is easily on his way to another
1,000 yard season, with 638 yards
and 6 touchdowns through the
first five games.
Receivers Ricky Kincaid and
freshman Reggie “Rocket” John-
son are having a fine season.
These two are on a pace to catch
46 passes for over 850 yards com-
bined. The Eagles have a trio of
talented running backs as well.
Tony Adkins, Reggie Jenkins,
and sophomore Andre Johnson
have combined for over700 yards
this season. Adkins already has

over 2,000 yards to his credit
since joining the Eagle varsity
his sophomore year.
Defensively, the Eagles are al-
lowing only 236.8 yards per con-
test. They have caused over a
dozen turnovers thus far. Paul
Simmons missed time on defense
while recovering from back and
ankle injuries, but should play a
major role when district begins.
Still, the Eagles are underdogs
this Friday night against
Carthage. "They have one of the
top teams in East Texas" Shipley
said of Carthage. He indicated
that you could tell this by who
they have played and by the lop-
sided scores in favor of the Bull-
dogs. But it is the American
dream for the underdog to suc-

ther. Lindale has scored 133
points so far, an average of over
26 points per contest. They have
led in every game, including 13-
3 at one time in Sulphur Springs,
31-20 against Whitehouse, and
24-20 in Westwood before fall-
ing in these contests.
Good coaching has played a
major factor in the Eagles’ of-
fensive production this season.
The Eagles have come prepared
as they have already scored more
points in the first quarter (33)
than they did all of last year (25).
The coaching staff has made
some excellent adjustments at
halftime as well. The third quar-
ter has easily been the Eagles’
best, outscoring the opposition
48-16. As the Eagles have tired
in the late stages of the game,
they have found the going rough
in the fourth quarter. But with
” Pick with the Times” is a weekly
contest in which readers are given a
chance to choose the winners of vari-
ous upcoming games. The winner
will appear as a guest picker in The
LmdaZe Timesregular prediction line.

the bottom of the form. This will be
used in case of a tiebreaker. If there
is still a tie, the tieing entries will be

ceed. I still get chills remember-
ing the U.S. Hockey team’s de-
feat of the Soviets a decade ago.
Or who, like myself, has seen the
entire “Rocky” series of mov-
ies? Was it because of great
acting that I saw these films?
No, it was the fact that no matter
what the odds, or who the oppo-
nent, the underdog overcame all
adversity to emerge victorious.
Last year, in the first meeting
of the two clubs, the Bulldogs
humiliated the Eagles in a 32-7
route. Some opposing team
members even employed unnec-
essary roughness toward the
Eagles during the game.
That was last year, this is now.
This time the Bulldogs will be on
Eagle turf. This is a much im-
proved Eagle team over the pre-
vious year. In addition, the
Eagles will be hungry. This team
knows that if they want to extend
their season beyond ten games,
then winning one of the next two
contests is practically mandatory.
Coach Shipley indicated that
the Eagles will need to get in the
right frame of mind to begin dis-
trict. "I feel real good about our
chances" he said, "we have as
good of opportunity as anyone
of making the playoffs". If not
for a couple of penalties or just a
few mental mistakes, the Eagles
could easily have been 4-1 he
indicated.
Carthage will come in confi-
dent. They have yet to lose a
game this year. After the spank-
ing they gave the Eagles last year,
the Bulldogs will be positive they
can repeat the feat in front of the
Eagle crowd. This same crowd
will play a vital part in support-
ing the Eagle cause, so come out
and cheer on the Eagles.
Steve Johnson, Lindale, was
once again the lucky winner
of the "Pick with the Times"
contest. The avid football fan
continues to stay on top of all
the area teams.
PAUL SIMMONS
LINEMAN OF THE
WEEK
He was the most consis-
tent on both sides of the ball.
He sacked the quarterback
as well as batted down a pass.
