“And whosoever shall compel
thee to go a mile, with him twain”
(Matthew 5:41).
The text certainly implies, in a
practical way, that God’s people
must have a certain attitude, cer-
tain values, certain commitments,
that they are willing to live by
regardless of the consequences.
needed in the matter of giving
and receiving.
We are talking about how much
this person has received, and how
little they had given.
I don’t suppose they have ever
stopped to think about it — that
for every sunrise, there is a sun-
set. Forevery night there is aday.
For every pain there should be
healing. Forevery wounded spirit
there should be a mountain top.
We are so prove today to act on
impulses, and to act like a juve-
nile in matters that really show
our immaturity and ourpoor spiri-
tual state.
IV. Second mile people needed
in the matter of understanding.
It seems more and more today
that we have less and less people
who are understanding. People
of mature thought, people that
have developed spiritual common
sense, who an understanding of
the time in which we live, of
world conditions, of all the vari-
ous clouded issues that crowd in
on us.
That’s talking about maturity,
that’s talking about our spiritual
development, that’s talking about
people who are not going to be
tossed around by every false doc-
trine, by every cult, by political
winds that blow one way one day,
and the next day some other way
but people with great stability
and strength. How desperately
we need this in our church, Sec-
ond Mile Christians.
V. Second mile people are
needed in the matter of work. It
is absolutely amazing to me what
has happened to this generation
when it comes to understanding
the work.
We have people living in the
third generation in their family
who are living on welfare ben-
efits. We do not say this in criti-
cism, but in distress and out of a
burden I suppose. To think that
people for three generations
would never try to dig out and
improve themselves, and go on to
better things.
We need second mile people
who are not afraid to work!
I believe that people need to be
actively working in their local
church. Today one of the great
problems of many people is that
they come and sit and enjoy the
services and never get involved. I

realize that Ephesians 2:8 tells
us, “that we are saved by grace,
through faith, and that not of
works,” but Ephesians 2:10 says
“for we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good
works which God hath before or-
dained that we should walk in
them.” I believe that the church
should be a beehive of activity of
its members actively involved in
the ministries, and the work and
labor of the church. We should
find a place of service, and we
should be busy for the Lord. We
need folks who will go the second
mile serving the Lord.

I. Second mile people in the
matter of forgiveness.
Someone thathas a kind, Christ-
centered attitude toward other
individuals that have acted some-
times in a very brutish way to-
ward us or toward others. All of
God’s people need a willingness
to forgive one another, even as
God, for Christ’s sake, forgave
us.
This word forgiveness, and all
that it implies, needs to be prac-
ticed in the Christian family.
We have no earthly idea how
we might react if we were in the
same situation that they are in.
II. Second mile people are
needed in the matter of patience.
One of the writers said, “Let
patience have her perfect work.”
Another said, “tribulation works
patience.” What a precious jewel
patience really is. James said, “be
patient, my brethren, unto the
coming of the Lord.”
Patience is a very difficult mat-
ter to practice daily. God help us
to become a Second Mile Chris-
tian in this matter of patience.
