____ New Ulm. Texas ________
New Ulm Texas, Jan. 27, 1938
Orchard, Victoria and Placedo.
Joyce Blezinger was sick last
week and misfed a day of
school.
The New Bremen volley ball
team was to play Industry Sun-
day but were unable to play due
to weather conditions, although
a number of young folks en-
joyed several games at the
school house between showers.
—A. A. Brune, Pinch hitting
for reporter.
Here lately, it seems like a
good many folks figure that if
somebody has
something like
10 dollars or 15
dollars or may-
be.a full sack of
flour ahead,
that they kind
of need watchin’
—and are may-
be not the best
type of person.
And this idea, it got started,
because somebody got himself
elected by hoppin’ onto any-
body with two-bits, and it look-
ed easy, so more fellers have
been tryin’ it.
But if we did not have some
folks who figure on a rainy day,
we would not have any savings
banks, or life insurance, or rail-
roads, or much of anything.
And you take the railroads,
it is different from what it was
100 years ago, when if you
wanted to go from Cincinnati
to Salt Lake, you could walk,
or ride a horse. And it would
take you 6 months or 8 months,
and at 100 dollars per month,
it would cost 600 or 800 dollars,
and also use up a good horse,
to boot.
And our grand-father, who
went west, with a tnusket on
his shoulder, he would not be
findin’ fault with the railroads,
and everything—he would be
givin’ 3 cheers.
Yours with the low down,
Jo Serra

In other words, the people who
got that lease got a 13-16 gam-
ble for $310.00, where we could
have received $69,000.00 for a
14-16 gamble.
The Senate Investigating
Committee is going into all
these matters during this week,

to give you some of their dis-

Boehmell Noska was recently
severely injured when he fell
from a car, driven by Melvin

said Noska was riding the

falling on the gravel road, in
which he received head injuries.
He was treated by a local doc-

ing land with a big overriding
royalty is that we should know
two things: first, that oil is
certainly under the land, and
second, that it is going to be de-
veloped immediately.
Now in practically all the
cases where the Land Commis-
sioner has leased these sub-
merged lands for from one
hundred to two. three or four
or five hundred dollars,
not required immediate
and in most cases no
has been done, even
some of the leases are
year old. On the other hand,
he has been offered hundreds
of thousands of dollars in cash
and the usual 2-16 royalty. In
other words, the company bid-
ding $69,000.00 was willing to
gamble that amount for 14-16
of the oil if it should be dis-
covered. The Land Commission-
er, however, awarded a lease
Throughout the history of
Texas the General Land Office
has been one of the most im-
portant state offices. Its im-
portance has increased tremen-
dously during the past few
years due to oil developments in
practically every county in the
state.
Along the Gulf Coast of Tex-
as numerous domes have been
discovered and the submerged
coastal lands belonging to the
State have become potentially
very valuable. Under the law
the Land Commissioner has the
right to lease these lands fori
oil development. Of course, he
does not have to lease them1
unless he wants to.
During the past year the new
Land Commissioner, Mr. Mc-
Donald, has leased hundreds of
thousands of acres of land,
much of it along the coast. In
nearly all instances he has
leased this land for a very small
Ssh consideration, and provid-
g for a bigger royalty if oil
should be discovered; but the
trouble is that the State is tak-
ing a gamble on whether oil
will be found or not.
It seems to me that if we are
going to gamble on oil being
under our land, we ought to
gamble the whole thing rather
