and sank his free-throw to end
the scoring.

tied again at half time 32 all,

end of the third quarter and were
pressed all through the final
period.

had 7, Duckworth made 3 and

The basketball season is over
for the Nocona Indians after
winning two of three games in
the regional play-offs. They
lost Saturday afternoon to Mexia
by a 62 to 57 score and were
eliminated.
A cold streak which prevented
them from hitting from the
field almost cost the Indians
the Friday night game and
it carried over to Saturday
when it did lose the game for
them. The Indians hit only 39
percent from the floor Saturday
afternoon but this was still bet-
ter than their shooting in the
game with Hughes Springs on
Friday night when they hit only
34 percent.
In the Mexia game, the Indians _ . _
got 23 of their points at the ball matches in the South Ward
free throw line and only 34
from the field.
Mexia jumped into a lead in
the first quarter, holding a
22-15 margin at that point.
The Indians began edging up on
the Mexia team and were be-
hind only 33 to 28 at the half
time and were even at 44 all at
the three quarter mark. The
local lads held a slight lead at
one time in the fourth quarter
but Mexia came back to out-
shoot them and that told the
story.
The Indians were only one
point behind with 48 seconds
to play but lost the ball to
Mexia and the Blaekcats quickly
put the game out of reach.
Roy C. Fitts led the scoring
for die locals with 18 points
while Randy Duckworth and Kyle
Kilcrease had 11 each. Jimmie
Walker made 9 and Gary How-
ard had 8 to round out die
scoring.

Mark Finley, 15-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Finley,
1410 Hwy. 51, Gainesville, was
killed instantly Friday after-
noon when he lost control of a
motorcycle he was riding and
struck a large iron post. Mark
was born in Nocona and attended
school here for a time. The
family resided in Nocona at
two different times, moving to
Gainesville from Nocona one
year ago. His father is employed
with Halliburton Oil Company.
The youth was a sophomore at
Gainesville High School and a
member of Hillcrest Church
of Christ.
He and his older brother,
Mike, were riding motorcycles
on the north side of Cooke Coun-
ty Junior College when the
tragedy occured about 5:45 p.m.
-They were eastbound, return-
ing to their home across Hwy.
51 from the college, when the
vehicle operated by Mark failed
to negotiate a curve in the road.
The motorcycle skidded on
loose gravel and went out of
control. He was reportedly
thrown against the post. He was
wearing a regulation safety hel-
met at the time.
