ONE SUCH CAPABLE helper is John Young who is shown operating the camera and
recorder in the foreign language department. Ks purpose in taping Mrs. Howell is to
provide this teacher with a means to perform a self-evaluation of her classroom teach-
ing techniques. All junior high teachers are In the process ot scheduling such self-
evaluation tapes and the capable help of students like John is invaluable.
WHILE ACTUAL IN-HOUSE productions represent a large part of the television tap-
ing, the GRETA (Gulf Region Educational Television Affiliates)educational presentations
as Channel 8 are a Bne source of teaching materials. Tommy Butler is shown taping a
show from Channel 8. Tommy capably helps in all phases of television productions,
which frees Mrs. Mitchell for planning and carrying out the many duties Involved with
the current junior high educational television productions.
ANOTHER EXPANSION OF junior high television is the taping of original teaching
tapes using student actors and studentproducers. The math tape, being developed here,
will be useful in teaching the history of money. In addition, these students have entered
the tape in a contest to be held in Houston May 8. This group of students is providing
the camera work, recorder operation, sound effects, narration, and actual acting.
NELDA HASCHKE, ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN, is shown at the control counter of the
Listening Center. Six program sources originate here and are transmitted to 12 study
carrels in the library. In addition to providing monaural and stereo programing, tape
to tape duplication and record to tape duplication can be accomplished at these controls.
ED PARKER, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL of the high school, and Mrs. Betty Wallace,
Media Center Director, inspect the new 3M secretary Thermofax copier. This com-
pletely dry desk-top unit produces ready-to-use spirit and stencil masters in four
seconds from existing originals. It is the latest addition to the school media center.
With curriculum demands constantly growing, a teacher’s time becomes a very valu-
able asset. This machine gives the teacher back that much needed time which was once
spent in typing and duplicating. For every job, memos, tests, announcements, there is no
need to retype onto a master. Just run the original through the “Secretary” and the
master is ready for the duplicator. It also copies, laminates, makes gummed labels,
and projector transparencies.
THE COACHING STAFF and physical education teachers are enthusiastically utiliz-
ing the television media to teach physical skills to Improve the proficiency of the stu-
dents. By taping and immediate playback, the student can observe errors in technique
and begin to work Immediately rather than waiting until some later date. As Danny
Potter, boys physical education teacher, is shown here, the teachers and coaches usual-
ly operate the recorder and camera for many of these teaching sessions.
A NEW MEDIA, in the junior high library, is the Listening Center. Nelda Haschke,
assistant librarian, observes as OdusGautney, Paul Jimenez and Mike Pennington work
at three of the 12 study carrels. Individual students or small groups use this facility for
individual enrichment and reinforcement.
MRS. MARY JEAN LIVINGOOD, librarian at Mark Twain Primary School, is shown
reading to Sheryl Bullard, Glesla Rivera, John Bramblett, Linda Whldden, Tracy Hadt-
son, James Craig Doyal, Anthony Weaver, Nelson Coleman, Larry Caddell, Gay Lynn

up in the library this year. Soft, colorful carpet creates a warm and intimate area where
the teacher can share the illustrations as she reads the story. It has been found that
reading aloud tn children's literature Increases the student’s interest In reading the
books for himself.
