Supak Brothers Are
County Spelling Champs
The Austin County Spelling Bee
saw one of the most exciting spelling
matches of its history last Thursday
as brothers Ryan and Ian Supak
went neck and neck for 30 rounds
before each conceded to the other in
the Bee.
It ended in a draw after 103 rounds
of the contest that started with 30
spellers from all the county dis-
trict’s schools below the high school
level.
Ryan (4th grade at Orchard Ele-
mentary) and Ian (6th grade at
Brazos Junior High) are the sons of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Supak of
Orchard.
They had never officially compet-
ed against each other before. Ian, a
former county champion in 1985 and
1987, had declined competition last
year because they were in the same
competition group. Ryan won the
County Championship in 1988. This
year, Ian was in the age group in the
East Texas Spelling Bee while Ryan
was in the Junior East Texas Bee
group.
However, the mythical county
championship pitted them after they
had won their respective groups.
It went 30 rounds in the harder
words rapid-fire before they called it
