A
The most popular pro-
ject area among 4-H youth
is livestock managment.
Some of the newest projects
are electricity, small engine
and crochetting.
Among the boys the live-
stock project Is tops while
the girls are most active
in the clothing project area.
Each member Is enrolled
in an average ot 3 projects.
There are nine different
4-H clubs in the county. The
community clubs and the
president of each are as
follows: Bellville Club,
Elizabeth Me Daniel; Cat
Spring Club, Ricky Fogle;
Ives Creek, Rhonda Harris;
Raccoon Bend Club, Doro-
thea Reese; San Felipe Club,
Sandra Brown; Sealy Club,
Mark Mlchalke; Wallis Club,
Ivan Janicek; Welcome Club,
Dwayne Wiecker; and West
End Club, Bruce Buenger.
Austin County has an act-
ive 4-H Adult Leaders
Association, notes Mrs.
Gaskamp, with a total of
50 members. The officers
for the current year are:
Mr. Ed. Michalke, chairman,
Mrs. H. B. Wright, Vice-
Chairman, Mrs. H. L. Dit-
tmer, Secretary and Mrs.
Gene Remmert , Treasurer.
4-H in Austin County of-
fers a lot of exciting act-
ivities during the coming
year, and now is the time
to join, adds Mrs. Gaskamp.
Check with a friend who
is a 4-H’er, or stop by the
County Extension Office.
Colorado County
4-H is a National Youth
development program of the
Cooperative Extension Ser-
vice which encourages crea-
tivity in a ‘learn by doing*
environment and provides an
effective way to leadership
development.
All youth 9 through 19
years of age - rural, urban,
or suburban, from all races,
creeds, ethnic and‘economic
backgrounds may join. There
is no entry fee, although each
4-H member is responsible
for his/her own projects.
There are five traditional
4-H clubs in Colorado Co-
unty, Eagle Lake, Weimar,
Frelsburg, Live Oak and
Garwood-Vox Populi.
There are also 4-H project
groups or 4-H special inter-
est groups within the county.
Among these are 4-H Horse,
4-H Foods, 4-H Clothing,
Beef, Rifle and Wildlife, Ele-
ctric, Poultry, Embroyolo-
gy. Dog Care and Training.
The Frelsburg 4-H Club
was organised In November
1969 and now has 18 mem-
bers. Mrs. Leslie Heinsohn,
the club’s adult leader, as-
sists the club members in
their activities and educa-
tional programs.
During the past years the
club members* time and ef-
fort was toward the restora-
tion of the town monument.
The club members planted
an assortment of flowers and
shrubs to beautify the sur-
rounding area. Fertilizing,
weeding, trimming and
watering also were part of
the restoration activities.
Through this community
project the club members
have shown an interest in
improving their community.
Recreational activities
are also included in the
club’s activities. A highlight
of these activities was atrip
to Lake Somerville during
the summer.
The Frelsburg 4-H Club
members participate in se-
veral projects during the
year. Among these are Rifle
Safety, Foods and Clothing.
Leaders of the Frelsburg
4-H Foods project group and
clothing were Miss Mildred
Schultz and Mrs. Joe Hen-
nuke.
Junior Leader French
Ordner also assisted with
clothing.
4-H members participat-
ing were Dawn Werland,
Margaret Henneke and Mar-
gie Henneke.
The clothing project group
members included Donna
Venghaus, Melissa Henneke,
Janis Weishuhn, Margaret
Henneke, Patti Venghaus,
Joan Weishuhn and Margie
Henneke.
National 4-H Week Oct. 6-12
Austin County
Since this week. October
6-12, is National 4-H Week,
it is a good time to look at
the current 4-H program,
says Mrs. Janice Gaskamp
Assistant Austin County Ex-
tension Agent for the Texas
Agricultural Extension
Service.
A total of 447 youth be-
tween the ages of 9 and 19
are presently enrolled to
4-H work, notes Mrs. Gas-
kamp. There are 215 boys
and 232 girls in the program.
