Cattle numbers can be ex-
pected to Increase again dur-
ing 1972.
According to the latest fig-
ures from the Texas Crop
and Livestock Reporting Ser-
vice, major gains across the
United States in 1971 were in
beef cow numbers and beef
heifers. From January 1,1971
to January 1, 1972, beef cow
numbers increased three per-
cent while beef heifers 500
pounds and over being kept
for cow replacements in-
creased six percent.
This holdback of heifers
emphasizes the expansion of
beef herds is coming soon.
With spring Just around the
corner and a generally good
outlook as tar as grazing is
concerned, the demand for
heifers may be even more
startling in the next month
or so.
In recent years, cattle num-
bers have increased primar-
ily due to the increased de-
mands for feeder cattle by
feedlots. In 1955 only about 10
million head of cattle were
fed in the 23 major feeding
states compared with 25.3
million head last year.
Furthermore, cattle feeding
should continue to grow. Con-
sumers are now demanding
grain finished cattle instead
of those finished on grass. In
other words, they are demand-
ing a higher quality of beef.
This can be illustrated by the
fact that 59 percent of all the
beef produced in the U. S. in
1970 graded USDA Choice -
while back in 1955 only about
one - third was equivalent to
that grade.______________
