MORNING BLAZE DEMONSTRATES
ADEQUATENESS OF NEW SYSTEM;
THRILLING RESCUES ARE MADE
Walker-Caldwell water system and the city's new fire
engine with the able assistance of a volunteer force by
Chief R. R. Smalley saved the city the loss of probably
fifty homes a lumber yard and at least one oil well in
block 3-1 this morning when at 9:30 the first alarm turned
in since water and fire engine service arrived called the
department to the blazing residence of Mrs. L. A. Allen
at 1M Elm street.
Thrilling rescue of Mrs. Oscar Allen and her three-day-old
child from the burning house by Rev A. J. Mor-
gan and Mr. Allen who together ran into the room where
she lay in bed with her child amid choking smoke and
with flames bursting through from the adjoining kitchen
was a feature of the fire.
Fire Chief Smalley reaching
the fire in quick time after re-
ceiving the alarm put down
some GOO feet of hose from the
hydrant at the corner of Elm
and McAmis. The rush of water
extinguished the fire in a few
minutes.

DISARM AMENTROW
Corbett No. 2 is in the new
town of Tomcorbett in the
northeastern pnrt of the county
where the Hughes No. 1 created
a sensation several months ago
when it came in for production
establishing the possibility of a
considerable pool of oil in that
area previously looked upon as
probably dry. Two weeks ago
the Hughes No. 2 drilled in for
800 barrels and an independent
well at the northeast of the
townsite came in for about the
same amount of oil.
Drilling in of the Corbett is
accepted as establishing the pool
beyond question and as of con-
1 siderable extent and richness. It
is understood not to have been
the intention to bring the well
in for some time. Gas at the top
of the sand contrary to pre-
vious conditions in the pool up-
set calculations with result that
the flow was not prepared for.
Tankage and connections were
rushed up last evening from
this city and by tonight it is
stilted the oil will be amply
cared for.
