This first Sunday after Labor Day is a new holiday that
has not received a great deal of publicity - it is
Grandparents Day to be observed this year on Sunday,
September 13. It is a "new” holiday or, in reality, one that
has been official for just a few years. The U. S. Congress
authorized it in 1978 and the first Grandparents Day was
proclaimed later that year. That makes this year's
observance the 4th one ever. It is a little - known story
dedicated to a heart ■ wanning and tenderly appropriate
part of everyone’s family. The campaign to give
Grandparents Day an official status was begun in 1973 as
ideas in West Virginia and in Georgia. Michael Goldar of
Atlanta, Georgia, one of the originators of the idea in 1973,
to now the executive secretary of the National Council for
the Observance of Grandparents Day. He said recently
that the event is gaining in popularity and has already
become the subject of the greeting card manufacturers.
So, remember this Sunday, September 13, it's Grand-
parents Day.
