• Approximately 82 percent
the livestock owners attending
the series of brucellosis meetings
held over the county last week,
indicated that they favored the
Type I or vaccination program he
put into effect in Colorado Coun-
ty. Only 5 per eent indicated a
preference for the Type ll or
testing program, while 13 per
cent favored no program at all.
Baseti on these opinions expres-
sed by cattle owners, the Colora-
do County Brucellosis Committee
in a meeting held Monday night
of this week decided to circulate
a petition among the eattle own-
ers of the county to put the Type
1 Control Program into effect.
If 75 per cent of tne cattle own-
ers, as shown on the tax rolls,
sign this petition then all eattle
owners in Colorado County will
have to have all of their heifer
calves that are being kept for. re-
placements officially vaccinated
by a veterinarian at the owner’s
expense. Dairy heifers will have
to be vaccinated for brucellosis
between the ages of four and
eight months and all other heif-
ers to be saved will have to be
vaccinated between four and 12
months of age. No bull or steer
calves or heifer calves going to
slaughter will have to be vaccin-
ated.
Under the Type I program,
there will be no restrictions on
the movement of any cattle in or
out of Colorado County. How-
ever, whether the program is a-
dopted or not. all female cattle
■will still have to be hlood tested
before they can be shipped into
a modified certified brucellosis
area. The one exception is offic-
ially vaccinated heii’ers under 30 i
months of age.
It was felt by the committee
that if the Type I program was
put into effect in Colorado Coun-
ty, it would greatly reduce Bangs
disease in the county, and when
■the time comes to completely era-
dicate the disease then the job
can be done without too much
trouble or hardship to the cattle
owners. However, any change in
the program must be first approv-
ed by 75 per cent of the owners.
Present, plans are to have cop-
ies of the petition available in
banks and other places over the
county and livestock owners are
urged to stop by these places and
place their signature on the peti-
tion. In addition, a number of
■cattle owners over the county will
be contacting other owners in
■circulating the petition. Anyone
desiring to assist members of the
committee in circulating these pe-
titions are asked to contact the
committee members in their area.
Members of the Colorado County
Brucellosis Committee are: Gard-
ner Duncan, Eagle Lake, chair-
man; Hugh R Wilson, Alleyton,
Secretary; C. E. Johnson, Altair;
Uharles T. Trefny, Weimar; Jim
Clipson, Eagle Lake; Billy Lehr-
er, Garwood; and Charlie Kear-
ney, Columbus.
