1 lollowing Henderson’s first
victory of the season in their
.1. home opener last Friday, Lions
head coach Phil Castles keeps coming
back to two words: improvement and
consistency.
Without question, the Lions have
statistically improved with each game
of the season halving their 22 point loss
to Whitehouse to an 11-point deficit
against Pleasant Grove in game two
before beating Jacksonville by six last
Friday. But not only are final scores
and stat totals improving (running
back Kevin Fields and quarterback
Sevastian Deleon both smashed their
offensive records for the season last
week) Castles notes that the overall
team is becoming more cohesive,
calling their victory over Jacksonville
“a team effort.”
Looking back over his team’s
progress since their loss to Whitehouse
in the season opener, Castles
emphasizes the consistent strides his
team has made over the last three
weeks. He even questions whether
they could have beaten Jacksonville if
they were at the same level they were
in their first game.
“There’s no doubt that we’re a
better football team than we were
on week one,” Castles said. “I think
Jacksonville is just as good a team as
Whitehouse. We’ve come a long way
and kind of had to persevere and push
through some adversity.”
Much of that adversity has had
to do with fatigued players tasked
with playing on both sides of the ball
going up against more rested players
from bigger teams. Castles credits
this discrepancy with the “bumps
and bruises” his team has faced along
the way, most notably when Caleb
Medford, who started game one as the
that Henderson is favored to beat.
But despite their confidence, Castles
is quick to remind his players that no
opponent should be overlooked.
“We emphasize the reason that we
were able to overcome and persevere
through Jacksonville is because of the
hard work we put in,” Castles said.
“And I believe that. So it would be a
shame not to put that same work in
this week.
“One of the big things is we work
on us. We always talk about that.
We’re working on the things that
we didn’t do right and the mistakes
that we made. So if we continue to
do those things we’re going to have
improvement regardless of who we’re
playing.”
That doesn’t mean that Castles
isn’t preparing specifically for Center’s
offense. Led by junior quarterback
Jayden Hicks, who already has 568
total passing yards this season in
Center’s first three games, Castles is
preparing his defense for coverage-
based play that’s “a little different”
than what they’ve run in the past.
Unlike Jacksonville quarterback
Tristen Shewmake, Hicks is much
more prone to scrambling around the
pocket, staying alive and looking for
big passing opportunities resulting in
longer offensive plays that prioritize
patience and waiting for the defense to
make mistakes. This creates a new set
of challenges for the Lions who thus
far have faced largely rushing-based
offenses.
“You’ve got to work a little bit
differently and emphasize your
coverage end of it,” Castles said. “Their
quarterback is a really talented kid.
He’s going to be looking for that big
strike.”
Castles best response to this
challenge is the same word he keeps
preaching: consistency. When he
thinks back on how well his team has
