The success of small and mid-size
businesses is an important econom-
ic indicator, and new survey results
show encouraging news. Despite pric-
ing pressures, talks of tariffs and even
recession, those in the business com-
munity are by and large feeling good
this fall.

Chaplain, Alfredo Salvatore was nominated by
Bradshaw in the category of Program Services.
He was then chosen as the Celebrating Excel-
lence Winner for Region III which encompasses
all of Texas. Salvatore manages 118 volunteers
that administer 40 different programs for offend-
ers. He also was praised for serving not only as
chaplain to offenders but also to staff at the facil-
ity. As part of the units CARE team, he is often at
the bedside and in the hospital rooms with staff
who need comfort and prayer.
Looking further ahead, optimism
does wane, with only 46 percent of
respondents believing a recession is
unlikely in 2020 and 34 percent believ-
ing a recession is unlikely in 2021.
While business owners are confi-
dent, there is some concern for the
future; however, experts stress that
U.S. economic fundamentals remain
solid.

The most recent PNC Economic Out-
look survey, conducted semi-annually,
found that 55 percent of small and mid-
size business owners describe their
outlook for their own business as opti-
mistic — a near record high in the sur-
vey’s 16-year history, with about a third
of respondents planning to increase the
size of their workforce within the next

The Oil and Gas Journal
reports oil and gas mergers
and acquisitions activity sur-
passed $ 17 billion in this year’s
third quarter, maintaining the
momentum established in the
second quarter, according to
a recent report from Austin-
based oil and gas data ana-
lytics company Enverus. This
quarterly total approaches
the 2016-18 historical quar-
terly average of $19 billion
and puts year-to-date M&A at
more than $85 billion.
“Most public [exploration
and production companies]
are highly limited in access
to external capital right now,”
said Andrew Dittmar, Enverus
senior M&A analyst. “Shale
companies are turning to
deals as another option in the
toolbox to bridge the gap to
free cash flow and hopefully
shift market sentiment back
in their favor. In contrast to
prior years, where Permian
asset deals dominated, we
are seeing broad geographic
diversity in the current mar-
ket and a variety of deal types
including joint ventures and
royalties.”

The financial communi-
ty has developed a negative
opinion about the profitability
of oil and gas wildcatters who
primarily operate as produc-
ers of oil and natural gas from
shale. A recent story in The
Wall Street Journal started
this way: “Horrific. Terrible.
Abysmal. The worst. Those
are terms equity analysts
are using to describe inves-
tors’ attitude toward energy
