FOOTNOTE TO HISTORY-Tcxas, not Oklahoma, is the real Indian
Territory. Texas was a Mexican state in 1828 when the U.S. Congress
reserved Oklahoma for red men and forced all whiles to withdraw. Oklahoma
even got its name from.two Chocklaw Indian words: “okla,” meaning people,
and “humma,”
meaning red.
Texas also got its name from the Indians in an indirect way. The Spanish
word, “Tcjas,” was the tribal name for the Hasinai tribe of East Texas. The
Caddos called this area “tayshas,” which means friends.
To tlic Comanchcs, Texas was special. They called it “tchas,” meaning happy
hunting grounds, or the place where departed spirits dwelled.
By whatever name, it became the home of more Indian tribes than any other
region of the U.S. By lire time Texas won its independence from Mexico, there
were at least 23 different tribes here. Eventually the number approached 50.
They made the new Republic a mosaic of cultures tlial would continuously
expand. The coming of the Germans, Czechs, Poles and some 30 oilier groups
has given Texas an ethnic mix equalled by few other states.
Researchers al the Star of the Republic Museum at
Washington-on-thc-Brazos say that Texas Indians had been exposed for 300
years to oilier cultural groups before the first Anglo settlers arrived here. These
included Spanish, French and Anglo explorers, plus missionaries, freebooters, \210 W. Summit
traders, soldiers and Mexican settlers. Texas'was, and is, the cultural 3 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Large Living/Dining Combination
