The woman who owned her
committed suicide and her
brother asked if he could
dump the cat out here.
Evidently she can hunt and
fight -- she’s still alive."
"Does she have a name?" 1
asked. "Nah," my friend said,
gently shoving the cat away
with the side of her boot.
"She’s just a pest."
"Okay, that’s her name.
Pest," I decided. "Last name -
- Control. That way her name
and job description are the
same."
We chunked Pest Control in
a live trap to haul her home in
the pickup. When we took her
in the house, the trauma of
Pest’s sudden relocation and
cold truck ride lasted about
three minutes. She ate some
kitty kibbles, curled up on the
sofa and went to sleep.
We’ve all adjusted well to
having a cat in the house.
Pardner sat on her a couple of
times because Pest sleeps in
his kitchen chair, but now he
just picks his chair up and
shakes it before he sits down.
Oh, and there was a slight
unpleasantness when Pest
innocently mistook the cold
ashes in the fireplace for a
litter box. Now the ashes are
gone and the fireplace is clean,
so that problem is solved.

My friend got a really funny
look on her face: "Well, I
Bl guess you can have all of
them, if you want. Take all
you can catch."
One pretty, silver-gray cat
was hanging around, rubbing
on our ankles and yowling.
" l ake this one," she said. "At
least you can catch her. She

hasn’t been out here too long.

Pardner has been eyeing
Pest's swelling midsection
though, and cynically hinting
that she brought a bonus with
her from the ranch. I, on the
other hand,'am in total denial.
"Just adjusting to the good
grub around here," I suggest.
"Uh-huh," Pardner replies.
Pardner is philosophical
though: "With our luck, if we

a cat that day, 1 guarantee you

We’ve had a terrible time
this year with mice in the
^|house. We’ve been overrun.
^BOn a good night the traps
would get one or two, but the

Pest herself thinks she is in
heaven. She’s stopped the
ankle-twining and persistently
yowling. (I’m convinced that
she was just trying to explain
that she wasn't an outdoor
ranch cat: "Hey, you gotta
understand! Listen to me!
There's been this terrible
mistake made!") Pest Control
hasn't left a mouse on my
pillow yet, but she's been quite
faithful in her patrols of the
house. And I haven't seen anv
