I had made a traveling
stop in Electra while
traveling from Amarillo to
Dallas for a conference
where 1 was to speak on the
subject of psychiatry. 1 found
myself at the local Dairy
Queen and since the place
was crowded, an old
gentleman asked if he might
join me.
I agreed and after
some general conversation
while the crowd began to
thin, he got around to asking
me what I did for a living.
When I told him 1 was a
practicing psychiatrist, his
eyes lit up.
“1 have a story that
might interest you,” he said.
“Since you are a psychia-trist
and valentine’s day is near,
you might appreciate this.”
I wasn’t sure what my
profession had to do with
valentine’s day, but I told the
man that 1 was always
interested in a good love
story.
“I was married for
over forty years,” he began.
“For the last twenty of those
years, my wife used to put a
red rose on my pillow on
valentine’s morning. I’m not
sure how she managed t,” he
said, looking oft* into the
distance as if he were
thinking about her. “I mean I
never saw one of the flowers
in the house and never
smelled them until that
morning when I awoke with
the rose under my nose.
Perhaps that wonderful smell
is what woke me.”
“That’s interesting,” 1
said. “She was a very
thoughtful woman and must
have loved you very much.”
“Yes,” said the old
man. “I’d wake smelling the
rose and she’d be lying there

“Yes. It was a game
we played 1 suppose.. Me
waking to smell the rose and
she pretending that it had
appeared by .tnagic. It made
valentine’s day a special day
for us.”
“So, she’s passed on
then, I assume?”
“Yes,” he said,
looking into my eyes. “Five
years ago. That’s what makes
the story even
interesting.”
“How’s that?”
“1 dreaded that first
valentine’s day without here,
of course, since it ha4,been,
such a special day for us.
When I awoke the morning
of the 14th, there was no red
rose on my pillow. There was
however, a yellow rose in the
middle of my wife’s pillow.”
I smiled at him a
moment, waiting for an
explanation, but he acted as
if that were the end of the
story.
“So, who put
there?” I finally asked.
“I have no idea,” he
said. “But every year since
her passing a yellow rose has
appeared on her pillow.”
I smiled again at the
old man, not sure if he was
pulling my leg or really
believed his tale.
“What’s
significance of the
turning from red to yellow?
I asked.
“You’re the psychia-
trist,” he said. “You tell me.”
I leaned back and
sipped my now cold cup of
coffee and thought a
moment. The old mans face
was stem and he truly wanted
an answer to his question.
“If you really believe
what you’ve just told me,” 1
said. “Then I would say this.
