People no longer marry just
to have families, said Ed Pope,

in human relations and deve-

fulfillment In a society in
which other relations are in-
creasingly unpersonal.

In child rearing, the family
increasingly is giving way to
peer groups and "all one can
do is speculate about its ef-
fect.” said Pope
This has never happened in
a society before, he said.
Children have been turned
over to other groups to be
raised, hut never a group of
its* jwh age. It is juai liappeu-
ing in our society with no
real control or direction.

this time it was different, this time he wouldn't be going back to his job.
At first, retirement seemed frightening, like being shut off from the main-
stream of life. He had seen too many men age beyond their years, after their
career ended. He had no wish to be on the sidelines. He and hie wife could have
moved to a warmer climate and just have taken it easy. He didn't want that.
So, before he left home, he had a long talk with his minister.
He found that there was plenty a man his age could do. Financially se-
cure, he could afford to volunteer for a job. In fact, through the Church there
was work he could do that would spread to the farthest corners of the world.
Right now, he is enjoying this vacation. He is savoring every moment of
it Because, when he gets home, he’s going to lead a full and useful life. And
that’s the way he wants it.
