i am a subscriber to the Alvin Sun. I am presently attend-
ing the, J'nfy-rMltv of Texas at El Paso I have read your
sports column week after week with a mixed amount of
amusement and disgust In most of the sperrs columns in-
cluding the column by Tom Murray the copy praises and
lauds the u. of h. and Texas a&m as if they were the best
in the Southwest In football and basketball and almost every
other sport there is. This couldn't be further from the truth,
of course. The true sports power in the Southwest is the
University of Texas at El Paso. Think not. you say*’ Let us
first begin our lesson with the spoil of football. Contrary
to popular belief (in the Houston and Alvin area), the Univer-
sity of Texas at El Paso was the number one team in the
Southwest in football in 1968. Sports Illustrated ranked U.T.-
E1 Paso number one, Texas A & M number two. and the U.
of Houston third In the final ratings. U.T.-E1 Paso was
ranked number one in the nation Ln pro drafts by Sports
Illustrated w‘th Fred Carr, All-America linebacker being
the first round choice of the World Champion Green Bay
Packers, and snapped up almost as fast by the Packers
was Billy Stevens, the first quarterback in N.C.A.A. foot-
ball history to pass for over 6,000 yards. This is not to
mention Charlie West, another N.E.A. All America at de-
fensive half-back. Now let's look at the records of the three
football teams. U.T.-El Paso had a 7-2-1 record including
a solid 14-7 victory over Ole Miss in the beautiful and
majestic Sun Bowl (it is scooped out of rugged mountain
terrain). The U. of H. happened to fall to that same Ole
Miss team, incidentally.
Turning to basketball we see a very strong team in the-
U. of H., especially this year. However, U.T.-El Paso has
been a basketball power in the Southwest (and ruler of it)
for at least ten years displaying a more consistently better
team than the U. of H. including a N.C.A.A. National Bas-
ketball Championship in 1966. I'm not sure, but I believe
it is the only valid national championship team in Southwest
history (that is by a team from the Southwestern part of
the U.S.).
Turning to track, we see that U.T.-El Paso will probably
send more track men to the Olympics in Mexico City than
all the other teams in the Southwest combined. The star studded
cast includes Bob Beamon, world record holder tn the long
jump and top contender in the hop, skip, and jump, and Kerry
Pearce, world record holder in the two mile indoor.
In conclusion, I will concede golf, and baseball to the su-
perior U. of H. teams, but I predict that within 5 years U. T.-
E1 Paso will surpass all Southwest teams in this area too
(baseball). Look for All-America possibilities in pitcher
Bill Dieselhorst from Fairfax. Virginia. If we give ten
points for each major team sport and five points for each
minor team sport, U.T.-El Paso leads the U. of H. by a score
of 25 points to 15 points (both teams having only so so teams
in tennis). Actually the Southwest is more U.T.-El Paso
MINER territory than Cougar territory, only most of the
people in the Gulf Coast and Central Regions of Texas have
not been propeily educated to this fact. Need I say more.
If so please write for any desired information.
