The Alvin Gulf Crossroads
chapter of the American Busi-
ness Women’s Association
held its eighth Annual Boss
Night dinner at the Holiday
Inn, Monday. Feb. 10. The
president. Mrs. Viola Under-
wood, welcomed guests and
introduced the toastmistress,
Mrs. Helen Lewis.
Theme for the occasion was
’Pin a Rose on Mr. Boss Man.’
Each year one boss is select-
ed to reign as “Boss of the

State President To Address Alvin Branch
The Alvin Branch of the
American Association of Uni-
versity Women will observe
Association Day with a lunch-
eon at Jimmie Walker’s Res-
taurant in Kemah on Saturday,
February 22, at noon.
Guest speaker will be Mrs.
Marvin Pedlar of San Antonio,
president of the Texas Divi-
sion of AAUW. Mrs. Pedlar
is a graduate of Hamline Uni-
versity in St. Paul, Minn.,
where she received many hon-
ors. She has done graduate
work at the worden school of
Social Science, Southern
Methodist, U. C.L. A.,and
Trinity University. She has
worked with the YWCA and
Gallup Polls and has served
as a teacher In Minnesota
and San Antonio.
Active in AAUW in many
capacities at both the local
and state levels, Mrs. Pedlar
is serving her second year as
membership in every Chamber
of Commerce tn the Gulf Coast
area. He stated that the growth
and overflowing suburbs of
this area is a challenge for us
today, and planning for the
future growth should be done
in a wise and progressive
way Instead of the hodge-podge
way it is done now, lest we
fall into chaos. We must feed
each other in order to have
the proper progress, withpro-
gressive leaders. Mr. Ches-
ser issued a challenge to each
person present to become pur-
posefully involved In every
facet of progress in the entire
Gulf Coast area.
Chapter in Pearlend judged
the letters and Henrietta Bar-
ker announced the decision.
The honor went to H. L. Barn-
es, vice president of the First
National Bank of Alvin. The
trophy was presented to Mr.
Barnes by the 1968-69 Boss of
the Year, Sam Rowe.
Woman of the Year, Mrs.
Esther Green, gave a history
of ABWA and introduced each
of the past presidents of the
Gulf Crossroads chapter. Be-
nelese Keithley named the re-
cipients of scholarships, given
by the chapter.
Faye McGowen, employee
of Wdlbcrr.’s, gave the voca-
tional talk, giving a brief
history of the store and tell-
ing of her duties
Ethel Moran introduced the
guest speaker, Alec Chesser,
vice president of the Houston
Natural Gas Corporation. Ev-
en though Mr. Chesser was
born in Wichita, Kansas, he
is a full-fledged Texan. He
was associatedin radiobroad-
rssring with rhe late Kern
Tipps. They broadcasted foot-
ball games for Humble OU
and Refining Co. In 1955 Ches-
ser became director of Public
Relations for the Houston Nat-
ural Gas Corporation, and in
1964, he became vice presi-
dent of the Company,
Mr. Chesser is very active
in community projects, such
as Boy Scout work. United
Fund Campaign, Cerebral
Palsy Orgination, a member
of the Press Club of Houston,
Public Relations Society of
America. U,S.O. CouncU, and
many more.
Mr. Chesser's speech would
qualify him for honorary
