Shakespeare Club
Holds Meeting
The Shakespeare Club met in
regular session on Wednesday, Jan.
7, at the F & M Bank Hospitality
Room. The meeting was called to
order by the president, Mrs. Melba
Shelby, and Mrs. Betty Bettis
opened the meeting with prayer.
After the business meeting, Mrs.
Nancy Scott, program chairman,
introduced the program for the
afternoon. Using the quote from
Anthelme Brillot-Savarin, “Tell me
what you eat, and I will tell you what
you are,” Mrs. Scott introduced
Mrs. Eula Weaver and Mrs. Opal
Clayton, who brought the program
on “Preparing for a Healthier Life."
Mrs. Clayton gave the members
many interesting ideas from Dr.
Jean Mayer’s book, “A Diet for
Living.” She spoke on nutrition,
calories, energy, nutrients and
vitamins. Mrs. Eula Weaver’s talk
was based on an article from
Redbook Magazine, by Nancy
Stedman, “Exercise Without Really
health has been air-tight for years,”
says Addison A. Taylor, M.D.,
president of the Heart Association in
Texas. “But recent evidence
strongly points to a connection
between second-hand smoke and
increased risk of heart disease.”
This is the first time the Heart
Association has commented on the
risk of cigarette smoke i” the air
around non smokr rr-
“The Surgeon General’s report is
the most comprehensive collection
of scientific evidence on the hazards
of passive smoke,” says Taylor
“The implications are alarming.
The health of non-smokers must be
protected. The most logical way is
to restrict smoking in public
places.”
Exercising.” Mrs. Weaver pointed
out to the members how they can get
a lot of their exercise from the way
that they do their housework. She
said that a person should lose 3000
calories a week to have a longer life,
and she gave the members several
tips on how to lose these calories,
such as bicycling, climbing stairs,
gardening, mopping floors, mowing
lawns and vacumming. She
recommended the Senior Citizen
Exercise Program under the
direction of Bob Poynor.
Members present to enjoy this
program were Mmes. Allene Box,
Roselle Burleson, Betty Bettis, Jean
Kirk, Nell Mohon, Barbara Nowlin,
Rosa Smith, Mamie Smith, Betty
Terrill, Eula Weaver, Opal Clayton,
Melba Shelby, Alzira Weaver and
Miss Roger Mae Smith.
The next meeting will be at the F &
M Bank Hospitality Room on
January 21.
Farley, Jim Farley, Wilson Kirk,
Emmett and Effie Gober, and
Salena Mohon were here for a good
singing.
Visiting with all residents were
Rev. David Mosser and Rev. Cecil
Harper. Kay Boen visited Texana
Biair, Leota Currier, Lona Drake,
and Mettle Dyson.
Elbert and Abbie Lindley were
here to see Ruby Dillard and Clara
Hansford was here to see Pearl
Irvin.
Game winners this week were
Hip Franks, Mae Sides, Daphne
Lamb, Lois Chapman, Lillian
Underhill, Texana Blair, Leota
Currier, Cecil Short, Rosa
Swanner, Salena Mohon, and

Heart Association Warns
About Second-Hand Smoke
The American Heart Association
issues a new warning to all Texans:
exposure to second-hand smoke may
be hazardous to your health.
The Heart Association’s warning
matches similar findings released
by the U5. Surgeon General late last
year. Surgeon General C. Everett
Koop, M.D. presented scientific
evidence on the harm to non-
smokers of breathing exhaled smoke
or the smoke coining from the tip of
a burning cigarette.
The Heart Association says
pregnant women should not smoke,
and parents who smoke should avoid
exposing their children to the
harmful effects of involuntary
smoking.
The evidence on smoking or
