people were building things near the
water. The beach sand was formed
into a giant Sphinx, a castle-like
structure that had turrets and stairs
on the inside of it, a bear, a woman
and all manner of things. It was fun
to walk along and see all the cre-
ativity that went into building sand
sculptures. At night New Year’s Eve
people sat outside and built fires.
Our fireworks were duds. I tried
to light a package of firecrackers so
they would all go off together, but
nothing happened. 1 threw them in
the fire and nothing happened. But
some others worked and people on
either side of us had some real fire-
works, so we got to watch. It was a
great way to start a new year.
