With the current drought indices,

When tne day was down to a merci-
ful conclusion Virgil Holdman, Sr., went
out the door to depart for Desdemona
in his faithful Chevy pickup truck. It
hissed at him.
When he lifted the hood he discov-
ered that his battery was erupting. Also,
his pickup refused to start. Virgil, who
is a retired newspaper assembler, and
veteran former hand of the Dallas
News had to call a mechanic for aid.
His pickup was towed away to the labo-
ratory. A fine "Thank You" for Virgil.
He'd spent his day pasting up the paper
and now he was marooned in De Leon
and afoot.
It took some jockeying, but every-
one got home, the newspaper got
printed and everyone lived happily ever
after.
If there's a moral or a lesson to be
learned from all this, it has to be that
President Bill Clinton's tacky behavior
is affecting us in strange ways.
220th District
Court to employ
parenting classes
A significant new tool, parenting
classes, is now being employed in
the 220th District Court to help par-
ents and their children better cope
with the difficulties caused by di-
vorce.
The four hour classes are now
court ordered for all parents who are
going through a divorce or coming
back to court for a child custody suit.
The currently approved classes are
to be offered at various location, both
within and outside this three county
district, and include "Kids First" an
in-district program and a Hillsboro
program "Children in the Middle"
and "Children and Divorce" In
Brownwood.
In making the announcement,
220th District Court Judge James
Morgan said the program was ini-
grams. Call Eula Miears for more in- Barn. The event was well attended. The department raised approximately SI,800, which will help the fire depart- County back in May of this year by

County to participate there as well.
The positive aspects Judge Mor-
gan expects from program partici-
pation are: 1) lowered hostility be-
tween the parents and a much less-
ened exposure of their children to
any parental conflict; 2) parents are
better equipped to work through dif-
ficult child-related situations with
their ex-spouses and are generally
willing to let their children spend
more time with the other parent; and
3) parents who attend relitigate child

who do not.

brought to my attention by a friend
from De Leon who had gone through
a similar program during his divorce

to work earnestly on getting this

Extreme caution urged by firefighters
There are currently 1,601 state,
federal and local personnel involved
with fire suppression, mitigation and
prevention in the state of Texas. This
number does not include the 1,800
volunteer fire departments and their
personnel who successfully perform
initial attack fire suppression. The
approximate cost to date is
$29,670,000 for this year, according
to the Texas Forest Service Statewide

KBDI indices in the East Texas
Piney Woods range mostly in the
moderate to high with a few in the
extreme. The KBDI indices are high-
est in the northern part of the East

KBDI indices still in the 600+ range.
The KBDI is specifically developed
to equate the effects of drought with
potential fire activities. The rating
ranges from 0-800 where 0 defines the
point where there is no moisture de-
ficiency and 800 is the maximum
drought possible. Index readings be-
tween 600 and 800 indicate extreme
fire danger, according to the report.
A total of fifteen counties in East
