The Friendship Club at Ar-
cadia voted to give a donation of
' $5 to the March of Dimes at their
recent meeting in the home of
Mrs. T. L. Roberts.
A social hour followed the busi-
ness meeting and game prizes
i were won by Mrs. H. P. Hewey
Tr„ Mrs. W. B. Jdhes and Mrs.
M. Collins.
The next meeting will_be held
| at the home of
Santa Fe High School Coach I
Fred Ferguson, Alta Loma, will I
have 11 letterman on hand this I
fall when he begins football I
workouts but isn’t overly optim-1
istic about the outcome of the I
1956 season.
The Indians step into faster
company this year, switching
from District 26-A into 25-AA
and the competition is bound to
be rougher.
have
year.
• We 11 have as good a team
as last year.” said Ferguson,
•even though we lose five start-
ers. The big trouble is that we’ll
in the higher classification.”
Just how much stronger the
opposition can be is a good ques-
tion. Deer Park, state champion
I for two seasons, was a member
I of 26-A.
"But just because we movtwup I
doesn’t mean we get away from
that bunch.” Coach Fergjson!
laughs. “They go right on with
us into 25-AA.”
Santa Fe posted a 6-4 record
I last year in Coach Ferguson s ini-
tial season there. He’ll have his
( line, from tackle to tackle, jack
I this fall in an attempt to equal
I or better that mark. But the boys
I who graduate — both ends and
| three backs—will be hard to re-
| place.
The Indians had one of the
smallest squads around last year
(with only 21 men out for the
| sport. Coach Ferguson attributes
the scarcity of candidates to the
fact that Santa Fe had no junior
high school program prior to last
fall.
Coach Steve Gregg handled the
junior high boys last season “and
did a wonderful job of it, x>o”,
Coach Ferguson says.
J. W Garrison, the Indians’
speedy 230-pound fullback, is due
to graduate this spring. His loss
will cut the strength of Santa
Fes attack considerably. Gar-
rison gained 1,195 yards rushing
in 10 games last season.
But the boy that will be hard-
est to replace, says Coach Fer-
* guson is quarterback Clayton Car-
roll. Carroll directed the Indians’
I offensive efforts and was adept
I at both ball-carrying and passing.
| Robert Bear and Kenneth Man-
I well, who held down the first-
I string end positions last fall,
| graduate in the spring, as does
II halfback Tommy Matejka.
' But the picture isn’s totally
gloomy. Jimmy Guyton, a 215-
pounder, and Wayne Arnold are
back to man the tackles Max
Tully and John Clayton return
at guards. Frank Marabclia is set
for another season at center and
Dan Woitena returns fcr half-
i back duty.
••Those are good boys we have
back.” Coach Ferguson says, “And
if we can pick up some help from
less experienced players, we’ll
make it interesting for someone.”
