Fifteen art students had the opportunity to display projects and
paintings that were viewed by more than 60 patrons at the event.

project will consist of the final grading of the Kost
Detention Pond, construction of the concrete pi-

Member for a Day” event June 3 aimed at band students in grades
6-8, the district website said.
The Dickinson High School Band hosted a clinic and was orga-
nized by grade level, and participants were taught various songs
that are performed at the Gator football games.
There was also a morning pep rally performance.
Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends were invited to
watch.
It gave younger musicians the opportunity to hear what new
skills they had learned.
The band will next perform in front of people when the football
season begins against FB Elkins in Missouri City, Thursday, Aug.

outbreaks in 2014, according to preliminary
data. The parasite can spread when people
swallow something that has come into con-

In comparison, 20 Crypto outbreaks
linked to swimming were reported in 2011,
with 16 in 2012, and 13 in 2013. It is not
clear whether the number of outbreaks has
increased or whether better surveillance and
laboratory methods are leading to better out-
break detection.
Michelle Nesrsta, who is the Alvin Parks
and Recreation Department’s recreation
manager, said “the best prevention is educa-
tion.”
She has this to tell residents who visit Al-
vin’s pool.

vomiting, it is best to avoid recreational wa-
ter for at least seven days after the symp-
toms have stopped. If diagnosed with Cryp-

This was the third year that Santa Fe ISD
was nominated to receive an H-E-B Excel-

reported on its website.
In response to SFISD’s district applica-

Reynolds, said, “Obviously, our readers
were very impressed by your written com-

are on staff at the city of Alvin,” Nesrsta
said.
If you do plan to visit the pool with in-
fants, the city’s pool rules read that all ba-
bies and toddlers are to wear swim diapers
or elastic swim pants. The rule would be
complying with all state and local laws.
The municipal pool is now open for the
summer.
The best way to help protect yourself and
others from germs that cause diarrhea is to
follow these steps:
• Don’t swim or let your kids swim if sick
with diarrhea;
• If diarrhea is caused by Crypto, wait un-
til two weeks after diarrhea has stopped to
go swimming;
• Don’t swallow the water in which you
swim;
• Rinse off in the shower before getting in
the water to help remove any germs on your
body that could contaminate the water;
• Take children on bathroom breaks often,
and check diapers in a diaper-changing area
and not right next to the pool.
water for at least 14 days after symptoms
have stopped,” Nesrsta said.
According to the city, Alvin has never had
any instances of Crypto.
“We follow the procedure on all AFR
(accidental fecal release) protocol. In the
event of an AFR, it depends on the type and
amount as to how it is treated,” Nesrsta said.
In the event of a diarrhea AFR, which is
the culprit for Crypto, the procedure the city
of Alvin staff members follow is to bring the
chlorine level to a 20 ppm and maintain that
level for at least 12.75 hours with a PH level
at 7.5 or higher.
“In the event of this type of AFR, the pool
would likely be closed at least a full day,
if not longer; that’s why it is so important
to make sure that if you are sick you stay
home,” Nesrsta said.
She also said that lifeguards are vigilant
and always remind parents of this rule.
“Pool sanitation is of the upmost impor-
tance to us and chemicals are checked every
hour while the pool is in operation, and at
least four CPOs (certified pool operators)
