With two weeks left in the reg-
ular high school football season,
one area team is already gearing
for the postseason, while another
looks to keep their playoff hopes
alive, Friday night.
The following is a look at each
of the games.
Clear Brook @ Alvin, 7
p.m., AISD Memorial Stadium
- This contest has huge playoff
implications for both teams.
Brook enters with a 3-2 third
place mark in District 24-6A,
while Alvin is tied with Clear
Lake for fourth at 2-3.
Clear Springs leads the district
with a 5-0 record, while Dickin-
Lady Mavericks Thurneisha Keys (1) and Shelby Browning reach for a shot at the net during Tuesday's match in Manvel. The 23-5A
champion Lady Mavs wrapped up an unbeaten run through district play with a straight set sweep over Willowridge. (Photo by Debbie

MANVEL - Playoff bound
and district champion Manvel
completed a perfect regular sea-
son run through 23-5A, Tuesday
night.
Junior setter Abby Harness
dished out 23 assists and junior
libero Torie Frederick added
15 digs, as the Lady Mavericks
swept Galena Park by 25-21,25-
13 and 25-9 scores at the MHS
Competition Gym.
Improving to 32-9 overall and
16-0 in 23-5A, the Manvel girls
also enter the postseason next
week with their first ever vol-
leyball district championship in
school history.
The Lady Mavs will meet
Houston Furr, Nov. 1 at Hous-
ton’s Barnett Athletic Complex
at 7:30 p.m. Furr finished as the
fourth seed from 24-5A.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Lady
Mavs’ head coach Susan Ken-
nedy said following the match.
“Having a tough preseason and
tournament schedule really
helped us prepare for district.”
Galena Park, who will be
competing as the district’s
fourth playoff seed, held a 17-13
lead in the opening set, but two
Thurneisha Keys’ kills and one
each by Taylor Frederick and
Shelby Browning quickly tied
things. Natalie Honore’s serve
then coaxed a Park hitting error
for an 18-17 Manvel advantage,
and the Lady Mavs never trailed
again. Junior outside hitter Ja-
mie Travis closed out the game
with a baseline spike.
