She added that to reduce cost

This project is paid through
the city’s impact fees, which is a

Francisca Menchaca let out
a “whew” when told that Alvin
would not be one of hundreds
of Walmart stores to do away
with its in-store ad-matching
program.
Medrano, who lives between
Pearland and Alvin in Brazoria
County, said she takes advan-
tage of the program several
times during the month. She
was under the impression that
doing away with the ad match
was for all stores until told oth-
erwise.
John Forrest Ales, with
Walmart, based in Arkan-
sas, said that wasn’t the case
here.
“Our store in Alvin, Texas
is not among the 500 stores
where we will no longer match
prices at the register,” he said.
“Customers count on us for
everyday low prices and Alvin
will just continue to follow the
ad-matching program.”
Walmart announced that the
program was going to be dis-
continued June 9. It also an-
nounced there are plans to im-
plement long-term discounts at
the affected stores.
Ales said those other stores
would have “long-term price
rollbacks” on many of the
items they sell to offset the
policy changes.
“At the other stores outside
Alvin, cashiers will no longer
be able to price match at the
register - from an ad or oth-
erwise,” Ales said. “We un-
derstand ad-match provided
an additional layer of reassur-
ance for customers. That’s why
we’re working hard to deliver
upfront low prices that cus-
tomers can trust every day of
the week.”
Menchaca said Alvin was
one location her family
shopped because of the prox-
imity to her home. She said she
has visited other Alvin grocery
stores, too, but often goes to
Walmart. She did say had Al-
vin been chosen not to partici-
pate in the program, she would
have gone more often to other
grocery stores in Alvin.
Ales didn’t say if Alvin
would one day cease to offer
the program or why this lo-
cation wasn’t among the 500
dropping the promotion.
Menchaca said she feels for-
tunate that there are enough
grocery stores in Alvin for her
to shop and price match.
She admits she has visited
every grocer in Alvin, includ-
ing Aldi, H-E-B, Kroger and
Stanton’s Shopping Center in
downtown.
Getting to be a contestant
on a national television game
show can be tougher than a
4-year-old learning the letters
of the alphabet.
But Shanna Flora, a resi-
dent of the Alvin area, did
it. She endured the lengthy,
people-packed process to earn
a spot on “The Wheel of For-
tune.”
“I’m a longtime fan of the
show,” she said.
She read that the Wheelmo-
bile was going to be in Austin
in April of last year and that
set her off on her journey.
When she got to Austin she
found that hundreds of others
had the same desire to be on
the show as she di<
“They told us they were go-
ing to do mini shows. We were
supposed to put our names in
for each of the drawings for
the show contestants,” she
said of the initial selection
process.
“They told us we didn’t
have to get there early (the
next day for the mini shows),
so I didn’t,” she said. “When
I got there, there was such a
long line and I didn’t get in
for the first round. I was so
mad.”
But later in the day she did
