By Altha Wilkerson
“He leads me beside still
waters.” Psalm 23:2. How
many of us have let this
verse, along with the rest of
the psalm, speak peace to
our troubled hearts? Why
is it so? I had much rather
sit by a rushing mountain
stream than beside a still
pool of water. When I think
of a place I would most love
to be, I have a vision of a
shady place beside one of
those mountain streams.
So, again, why does that
statement bring so much
peace?
Perhaps it is because we
are speaking of God as our
Shepherd. If He is our
Shepherd, then we are His
sheep. As we think of
ourselves as His sheep, we
tend to become like them in
our thinking. Then, the still
waters become more to our
liking.
“A sheep is a timid
creature at best, and a
stream of swiftly flowing
water inspires it with a
great fear, as well it may,
for the heavy coat of wool is
almost certain to insure
death by drowning if the
luckless animal is caught
up in the swirling current.
God has guarded the sheep
by a deeply implanted
instinctive fear of flowing
water, and a drinking place
therefore some quiet pool
which holds no terrors.
Because of the rough
country and the rocky
stream - beds, placid tools
are hard to find.
“It sometimes happens
that the shepherd brings
his flock up beside some
little streamlet that leaps
and cascades from rock to
rock, down the side of hill.
The water is cool and
refreshing, but, because it
Thoughts For Living
is rushing and gurgling, the
sheep will not drink it.
Therefore, the shepherd
turns to the task of
improvising a drinking
place. Using stones from
the stream-bed, he builds
up a little dam, banks it
with clay from the bank,
and holds the water back
until a pool is formed from
which the tiniest lamb can
drink in perfect safety.
“Using the figure of the
good shepherd who
provides in advance for the
needs of the sheep, or who
contrives circumstances to
their advantage, the
psalmist is singing of God
as the one who leads us
beside the still waters. God
knows our weakness and
the excessive strain which
life sometimes pours upon
us. But God also knows the
watering places, and
stands ready to prepare
them for us even before we
have felt the need of them.
Therefore there is no need
for anxiety. We will not
want, not with such a
shepherd.” From “Beside
Still Waters” by Roy L.
Smith.
I can remember a time
when I was waiting outside
an operating room ready to
be rolled inside. I was
supposed to be pretty well
“knocked out”; but I
wasn’t. I had thought I had
prepared myself well for
this time; but that wait
outside the operating room
proved to be too much for
my emotions. I began to
panic and no one was with
me. Then the words of
Psalm 23 came to me and I
began to repeat the psalm
to myself. Slowly the panic
left me and, once again, the
psalm had brought peace to
a troubled mind.
