Car Buying
Steady In
State
State Comptroller Bob
Bullock has stated that
collections of motor vehicle
sales taxes revealed a surge in
car buying in Texas.
“From the figures, I’d say
that the love affair with the
automobile in Texas not only
isn’t dead, but it looks like it
isn’t even sick," Bullock said.
March was a record month
for collection of motor vehicle
sales taxes with the amount
reaching more than 151.2
million for the period.
Collections were 28 percent
above collections for March
1980 and topped the depart
ment’s previous record
collections in a single month-
May 1978--by more than $6.6
million.
Average monthly collections
from September last year
through February of this year
have been about $38.2 million.
Bullock said seasonal new
car-buying peaks, manufact-
urer rebates and higher
vehicle costs all contributed to
the increased tax collections.
Motor vehicle sales are
taxed at 4 percent of the
selling price and the state will
receive about $460 million
during this fiscal year.

fact led him into many humor-

Although be had always
sketched and painted, even
during his active cowboy
years, it was not until he was
forced into retirement that he
took his wife’s advice and
considered selling his
pictures. From that late entry
into the art world, he achieved
recognition and financial
reward beyond his wildest
early expectations.
H. O. Kelly never made the
history books, but he is a
recognized American artist,
and his life is a delightful
addition to the stories of
American cowboys, farmers,
and artists, for he was all
three.
Without a doubt, the most
famous and accomplished
writer De Leon can claim is
William S. White. He is a
native son who grew up here
and graduated from De Leon
High School in 1922. He
became an Associated Press
feature writer and a staff
writer for LIFE magazine.
In the library we have bis
"THE STORY OF THE U.S.
SENATE", an excellent
source of information on how
that branch of our government
functions. Another of his
books, which is also available,
is “THE TAFT STORY”,
about Robert Taft, the Ohio
Senator who wanted so badly
to have the Republican
Presidential nomination.
There has been no question as
to the importance of this book
for it was awarded the Pulitzer
Prize for Literature.
One of the latest additions to
the library is "RAVEN MC
CORD" by Emily Austin
which was the pen name of
Joylene Hafford, whose recent

stretches back into the 19th
— century. For our Senior
Citizens with long memories,
it must be like a trip down
memory lane. For the curious
younger readers, it gives an
insight to a long gone, much
simpler (and happier, accord-
ing to Mr. Richmon) way of
life.
The author figures largely in
the latter part of his account
and expresses his philosophy
on many subjects. It is not
often we can get to know this
well one of our own townsfolk.
In last week’s Free Press,
Phil Tate mentioned James
Daniel Easley’s "AT THE
END OF THE RAINBOW”.
Easley was a 4th and Sth grade
teacher here from 1899 to
1901, and he describes our
school system in that day.
~ Needless to say, things have
greatly improved.
Many De Leon people
remember when Mr. and Mrs.
Hicks ran the Free Press, but
not many know that she wrote
a book which is in the library,
"ORGAN NOTES OF
DAWN". It is a one year
record of Mrs. Hicks' activities
on the farm. It is a gentle,
thought-provoking review of
the year by one who took time
to notice and appreciate the
daily beauties, poignancy, and
humor that most of us take for
granted or are too rushed to
see.
If you have run out of new
* Westerns and would like to
read about a real, working
cowboy, an account that is
funny and sad, and is, as well,
about a failed farmer who
eventually lived close by in
Blanket, and was a renowned
artist, too, “KELLY BLUE”
by William Weber Johnson is
for you.
