Meridian, Miss., June 21.—A special
to the Meridian Press from Qu it man.
Mass., says: Miss Olli Barfield, wnw
was assaulted and badly cut about the
throat yesterday morning at Cocos.
Choctaw county, Alabama, is still in a
critical condition. The negro who as
saulted the young lady was frightened |
by her screams and cut her throat
almost to the jugular vein. When her |
mother appeared on the scene he I
knocked her down with his fist and
made his escape.
He has has not been apprehended,
although a posse is in pursuit. His
name is either Charles Odem or Is.ah
Campbell.
The officers will probably have a
hard time catching him. as that por-
tion of Alabama will afford him goto
opportunities of escape in swamps.
