In Alvin the results of the eleciion may have been
surprising to some but we were willing to trust the re
suits to the intelligence of the voters. Alvin as the ori-
ginal dry precinct in Brazoria County, having voted dry
in 189R. several years before county-wide election, turn-
ed i.'out face Saturday and of the 113 votes cast. 276
voteu to legalize sale of 3.2 beer in Alvin and Brazoria
County while 167 voted against the issues giving the wet
rces a majority of 1<>9. A surpri ig feature in the Al-
vin box was the fact that the larger percentage of the
443 votes cast were those of the older people who v em
exempt of poll tax oi. account of being over 60 years of
age, and who unlike the younger voters, had lived foi
years during the time the liquor traffic was under gov-
ernment control before national prohibition and a “New
Deal" was deni red.
