gue-leading Pearland coming to
town, Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
“Every match we come with
some sort of goal,” Lady Yel-
lowjackets’ Head Coach Suzy
Buechele said following the
match. “We sit down and de-
cide what we want to try to ac-
complish. We did that tonight.
We came out and made mini-
mum errors.
“That‘s something that
haunted us all season, just mak-
ing silly mistakes. Because
those mistakes came back and
bite us when we playing in the
big matches. So we’re working
on being aggressive and keep-
ing the ball in play when neces-
sary.”
That aggression came from the
line as well with the Lady Jack-
ets delivering 14 aces and only
committing five service errors.
Junior defensive specialist
Kay lee Stanton sparked Alvin
in the first game with three aces
during an 11-0 run which broke
open a slim 9-8 lead.
Horsfall joined Holden and
Rowton with kills during the
same run to increase the margin
to 20-8, while Holden planted
another floor shot at set point.
The teams also battled back
and forth early in game two,
but kills by Rowton, Horsfall
and senior outside hitter Bailey
Thomas combined with Row-
ton’s ace to open up a comfort-
able 19-7 Alvin advantage.
“We serve first every day in
practice because that’s usually
the first contact you have and if
you can get a team out of their
system, then it makes your job
a little easier,” Buechele said.
“It’s good to see that pay off
(tonight).”
Memorial appeared to be
well out of its system with Al-
vin jumping to a 8-1 lead in the
third game behind two Holden
spikes, another kill by Rowton
and Sydney Dungen’s ace. The
Lady Jackets’ reserves then en-
tered the match and still main-
tained control as Ellie Korth
provided an ace and Meredith
Johnson belted back-to-back
kills to turn things into a blow-
out at 18-6.
Austyn Dungen followed
with consecutive aces and
Holden later put an exclama-
tion point on the evening with a
baseline kill at match point.
Alvin was coming off a 25-
5, 25-14 and 25-10 straight set
home sweep of Sam Rayburn
here on Oct. 9.
Hitting leaders included
Holden with 10 kills, Horsfall
with 17 digs, Austyn Dungen
with 16 assists, Sydney Dun-
gen with 10 assists and Thomas
with three aces.
Manvel sweeps SOHO - The
Lady Mavericks (18-12 over-
all, 9-2 in district) took out the
brooms at home against South
Houston by 25-4,25-10 and 25-
15 scores, Tuesday night.
Senior middle blocker Tatya-
na Tyson led the way with 15
kills and Marissa Stinson added
13 kills.
Manvel next plays at Pear-
land Dawson, Friday night at
6:30 p.m. and could move into
sole possession of second place
in the district with a victory.
