History was made
at National Oak Park
in Alvin when the first
steak cook off winners
were announced in the
Steak of the Arts fes-
tival on Sept. 17. The
festival featured much
more than the cook off
for those who braved
the heat.
There were arts and
crafts vendors such as
Izzy Jones of Seabrook
who was hammering
copper in his booth un-
der a tree at the park.
He was offering cop-
per jewelry and tools
to those who stopped
by his location along a
sidewalk in the park.

Area businesses will get their
sparkle going Oct. 6 when the
annual Business Expo and Taste
of the Town opens in the Knights
of Columbus Hall.
The theme of this year’s Al-
vin-Manvel Chamber of Com-
merce event is 2016 Blingin’:
Let Your Business Shine, and it
starts at 2 p.m. and runs until 7
p.m. The cost at the door for the
expo is $5.
“The Business Expo and Taste
of the Town allows attendees to
get to know business owners and
their services in a casual envi-
ronment - there’s no pressure for
you to buy products - in fact, so
many of the booths have really
cool give-aways and door prize
drawings. The six Taste of the
Town booths will also be giving
away samples of their favorite
foods,” said Johanna McWil-
liams, the president of the cham-
ber.
More than 50 businesses will
be on hand to let people know
what they are about and how
they can help residents meet their
needs. Many of those booths will
be giving away small gifts if vis-
itors stop by for a chat.
Lindsey Vaughn, owner of Re/
Max American Dream, said she
would hand out koozies to those
that drop by her table. Vaughn is
litis year’s perfect pearl sponsor
of the event.
Vaughn and some of the other
businesses will be offering door
prizes that will be given out at
various times during the five-
hour event.
Vaughn is offering three prizes
for the drawings. She has two
prizes of Kendra Scott jewelry
that each have a necklace and a
pair of earrings. She is also giv-
ing away a whiskey basket.

The first Steak of the Arts festival was held at National Oak Park on Sept. 17 in a blending of food and art. There was a steak cook ojf
where cookers tested their skills in preparing sirloin, ribeye and tenderloin steaks. Jackson Avenue, left photo, was one of the acts that
provided music for the event. There were also vendors selling all sorts of artwork and crafts. Food trucks and booths were on hand and
there was a Kid Zone, too. (Staff photo by David Money)
