If nothing changes in the next
week, Alvin and Manvel will be
represented by the same duo at
the state Legislature next year.
As of Monday, state Rep. Ed
Thompson was the only person
to file to run for election in the
District 29 House race. In the
District 11 Senate race, State
Sen. Larry Taylor is the only
candidate to have filed.
Candidates have until Dec. 9
to file to run in the county, state
and federal elections in the
March primary.
Thompson and Taylor both
filed for re-election in the
Republican primary. The two
experienced lawmakers were
busy in the last session as Taylor
led the GOP efforts to revamp
the state’s public education
finance system.
Taylor was chairman of the
Senate Education Committee
during the debate over school
finance and property tax reform.
While Thompson had a lower
profile, he was also instrumental

Rodney Smith continued a
long community tradition last
week when he held his annual
Customer Appreciation Day
Thanksgiving lunch at his Blades
Barber Shop in Manvel.
Smith has held the event since
1985 and began hosting it at his
cozy barber shop on Highway 6
when he first moved the business
to Manvel in 2005. He stayed up
most of the night before cooking
numerous dishes and sides and
many community members
brought potluck additions,
especially desserts. Ham, roast
turkey, dressing, collard greens,
Cajun rice, gumbo and numerous
desserts could be seen.

By Joshua Truksa
Staff Reporter
Dave Ferguson resigned as
executive director of Brazoria
County Emergency Services
District No. 3, sending his
immediately effective
resignation Wednesday.
Acting Executive Director
Beth S trope, the ESD’s
assistant director of finance,
said no reason was given by
Ferguson for his resignation.
Ferguson’s resignation
came five weeks after the
termination of former Director
of Administration Brian
Owens, who was initially
placed on administrative
leave following an arrest for
driving while intoxicated
while operating an ESD
vehicle.
The ESD has been
controversial in recent years
local fire departments
claim the ESD has tried to
control more decisions that
used to be made at the
department level.
The controversy reached a
peak when the ESD shut
down the Liverpool Volunteer
Fire Department after the
department lost its nonprofit
status.
Strope did not say how or
when a new executive director
would be named.
