UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. RUTHVEN, OF.DONNA, 'TEXAS.
CHAIN-TIGHTENING TOOL.Specification of Letters'Pateiit.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filedJune 23,:1915. Serial"No. 35,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known- that I,. GEORGE -W. RurHvEm,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Donna, in the county of Hidalgo and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and use-
fuli Improvements in Chain - Tightening
Tools, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
My present invention relates to an im-
10 proved tool to tighten chains - on automo-
bile wheels, etc.
The main object of the device is to pro-
vide a thoroughly efficient tool of this char-
acter which is simple in construction and
15 may be manufactured at a comparatively
low cost.
In carrying into effect this main object
I have provided a tool of the above nature
which will automatically lock when the re-
20 quired adjustment is attained in order that
both hands of the operator will be free to
manipulate the chain fastening device. Va-
rious other objects and advantages will be-
come apparent during the continuance of
25 the following description.
The above and other objects which will
become apparent are accomplished by such
means as shown in their preferred form in
the accompanying drawings, described in
30 the following specification and then more
specifically pointed out in the appended
claim.
In the accompanying drawings wherein
like character designate like parts through-
35 out the several views;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in-
vention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line
2-2 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated by
40 the arrow.
My invention consists generally of a pair
of substantially complemental levers which
include body portions 10 and 11, provided
at one end with handles 12 and 13 while
45 their other ends are curved to form op.
positely extending arms 14 and 15. Adja-
cent their respective outer extremities, the
arms 14 and 15 are cut away to provide
suitable gripping lips or hooks 16 and 17
50 which in the use of my invention serve to
engage the respective portions of the tire
chain. In assembling the levers, the arms
14 and 15 respectively are pivotally connect-
ed through the medium of a rivet 18 at a
55 point appreciably below the point of bend-
ing of the arms from the bodies 10 and 11,- thus byIreason of the proportion of length
of the - respective: bodies. :a - greater leverage
-nay be obtained when manipulating the dce-
vice. 60
In consistence with the foregoing I have
provided means for locking the respective
levers in a rigid position after the tire chain
has been tightened to -a desired degree, in
order that the operator may have the use 65
of both hands when adjusting the chain fas-
tener. To this end, the body 11 is provided
with a suitably curved segmental rack 19
which is secured thereto through the me-
cium of the rivets 20. The teeth 21 on the 70
rack are preferably on the upper edge
thereof in order that they may be posi-
tively engaged by a pivoted dog on the
other body 10. For the purpose of guiding
the segmental rack during the movement 75
of the respective bodies, the body 10 is pro-
vided with a guiding bracket 22 which is
rigid thereon as at 23 and engages the rack
in the manner clearly illustrated.
A dog 24 is pivoted to the body 10 at a 80
point 25 which is in proximity to the rack
19 and carries an enlarged portion 26 for the
purpose of receiving one end of a rod 27.
The other end of the rod 27 has connection
with an intermediate portion of a bell crank, 85
operating lever 28 which is in turn pivot-
ally connected to the body 10 as at 29.
It will now be recognized that the bodies
may move toward each other to tighten the
respective chain sections 30 and 31 to a de- 90
sired degree. However at the termination
of such adjustment the dog 24 will engage
the abrupt face. of the adjacent one of the
teeth 21 in the manner which will prevent.
the reverse movement of the rack 19. When 95
this operation occurs, the respective jaws
are retained in a fixed position relative to
one another while the operator may release
the handle portions 12 and 13 and direct
his efforts to securing the chain sections to- 100
gether through the medium of the chain
fastener (not shown).
From the foregoing it is believed that the
construction of my invention will be readily
understood, as will the advantages and 105
novel features of the device. However, it
will be recognized that the device is not
limited to use in combination with tire
chains as the same may be advantageously
employed for other purposes if it is so de- 110
sired.
