gagement with said first mentioned gear and
said third gear, a separating shield adapted
to pass between said gears and to move said
second gear out of mesh with said first men-
5 toned gear, and a pawl pivotally mounted
on said shield and engaging one of said
gears to move said shield between said gears
when said gears are rotated in one direc-
tion.
10 8. in a device of the character described,
the combination with a gear mounted for
rotation andc for longitudinal movement, a
spring adapted to retain said gear in its
outer position, a second gear mounted for
15 rotation and for lateral movement and
adapted to mesh with said first mentioned
gear, a third gear mounted for rotation and
for longitudinal movement and adapted to
mesh with said second gear and adapted to
20 abut the inner surface of said -first men-
tioned gear, a second spring adapted to nor-
mally hold said second gear in meshed en-
gagement with said first mentioned gear
and said third gear, a separating shield
25 adapted to pass between said gears and to
move said second gear out of mesh with
said first mentioned gear, a pawl pivotally
mounted on said shield and engaging one
of said gears to move said shield between
30 said gears when said gears are rotated in
one direction, a lug on said shield, a pair
of stationary stops disposed in the path of
said lug to limit the movement of said shield
in either direction, and a second spring
35 adapted to normally hold said shield out
of engagement with said gear.
9. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a gear mounted for
rotation and for longitudinal movement, a
40 spring adapted to retain said gear in its
outer position, a second gear mounted for
rotation and for lateral movement in said
frame and adapted to mesh with said first
mentioned gear, a third gear mounted for
45 rotation and for longitudinal movement and
adapted to mesh with said second gear and
adapted to abut the inner surface of saidfirst mentioned gear, a second spring adapt-
ed to normally hold said second gear in
meshed engagement with said first men- 50
tioned gear and said third gear, and means
for retracting said second gear from en-
gagement with said first mentioned gear
and said third gear, said means being adapt-
ed to be locked when in its retracting posi- 55
tion.
10. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a frame having a hole
at one end thereof, of a gear mounted for
rotation and for longitudinal movement in 60
said frame, a spring adapted to retain said
gear in its outer position, a shaft mounted
for lateral movement in said frame, a sec-
ond gear mounted for rotation on said shaft
and adapted to mesh with said first men- 65
tioned gear, a yoke niounted on said shaft,
a rod mounted on said yoke and having its
outer end extending through said hole and
having a hole formed therein near the outer
end thereof, a compression spring encircling 70
said rod and abutting said yoke and said
frame with its opposite ends, a transverse
pivot stud mounted on said rod at a point
intermediate the ends of said rod and dis-
posed exteriorly of said frame, a cam lever 75
pivoted on said pi01ot stud at a point inter-
mediate the ends thereof and adapted to
engage said frame with one of its ends to
retract said second gear from engagement
with said first mentioned gear and having 80
a hole therein adapted to register with a
hole in said rod whereby the hasp of an or-
dinary padlock may be inserted into said
second and third mentioned holes to lock said
second gear in a retracted position, and a 85
third gear mounted for rotation and for
longitudinal movement and adapted to mesh
with said second gear and adapted to abut
the iinter surface of said first mentioned
gear. 90
In testimony whereof I affix my signa-
ture.
