The New Delta, a competitor in the
field of morning journalism in New Or-
leans, flung its banner to the breeze
about eighteen months ago. It was ap-
parently a hazardous undertaking, as the
field seemed well filled, but that there
was room and a “long felt want” unfilled
in the morning field is evidenced by the
fact that the New Delta has just put in
a perfecting press of the latest and most
complete pattern. This looks like busi-
ness.

The new torpedo boat, Patrick No. 3,
was tested yesterday at Newport, Rhode
Island, and ran a mile in two minutes
and twenty-three and a half seconds.
No such time has ever been made by any
sort of a marine boat, and the going
through the water of this submarine
monster is simply marvelous. It is al-
most equal to time made by railroad
trains. No vessel could move out of its
waj^n so short a time. Naval warfare
in the future is to be revolutionized by
these wonderful torpedo inventions.

NOTICE.
Fort Worth Gazette: Having main-
tained for years that it was “Galveston
or nothing” as far as deep water was
concerned, Galveston papers cannot be
expected to announce that deep water
has been secured at Velasco.
Not being susceptible to the power of
corner lots the papers of Galwston will
most assuredly not announce that deep
water has been secured at Velasco or
elsewhere, until it has been secured.
When that great feat is accomplished,
here, there or elsewhere, Galveston pa-
pers will be the first to announce it.
The Magazine of American History for
October forcibly illustrates how a lead-
ing monthly, which keeps in touch
with the highest thoughts current of the
day in regard to great historical events,
may become a public benefactor as well
as an educator. Just as the inquiry is
at high tide concerning the portraits of
Columbus, one may open this beautiful
number and learn all about the most
important of them. The article by the
editor, “A Group of Columbus Por-
traits,” deals with facts and •'picture-
pedigrees that are well authenticated,
giving fac similes of the oldest and rarest
engraved prints of Columbus portraiture
extant, with much other data of timely
consequence. The double-headed con-
temporaryprint of the portraits of Ferdi-
nand and Isabella, a gem of great value,
is included; and Mrs. Lamb, with easy
grace, adds to her essay suggestive
(sketches of these sovereigns and their
great military triumphs in connection
with Columbus and the dawn of America
upon the map of the world, which is de-
lightful reading.

A Wonder Worker.
Mr. Frank Huffman, a young man of
Burlington, Ohio, states that he had
been under the care of two prominent
physicians and used their treatment un-
til he was not able to get around. They
pronounced his case to be Consumption
and incurable. He was persuaded to try
Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consump-
tion, Couffis and Colds, and at that time
was not able to walk across the street
without resting. He found before he
had used half of a dollar bottle that he
was much better. He continued to use
it, and is today enjoying good health. If

A New Yolk man lost $5000 on a horse
race, and next morning his wife found
him hanging by the neck in a closet.
How much better it would have been
had he given his wife the money and
then unostentatiously gone hence.
The model in the Clemenceau Case
was not dressed for northers, but she
was in the height of the fashion that
prevails among the blue-bloods and
aristocracy of those principalities through
which Stanley traveled in Africa.
If you meet something so unpardon-
ably vulgar as to outrage every senti-
ment of decency, just call it “art,” look
very wise, and it is all right. It may
make you a fool, and tug terribly at your
self-respect, but it is art, you know.
The Swedish nobleman, Boron Nor-
deuskjold, for robbing Indian graves of
relics for scientific purposes, was arrested
recently at Durango, Colo., and it was
believed his detention would cause in-
ternational complications. Yesterday
he was discharged and the blood on the
moon has turned out to be only a little
daub of red paint.
In the matter of circulars the railroad
commission has got up to twentiethly
and still they come. The old Methodist
preactier never went beyond fifthly and
sixthly when he knew his audience vas
getting tired, but the commission does
not seem to be so considerate of a greatly
fatigued public. Father Reagan should
be. coaxed off to Wooten Welle, Sour
Lake, or into some cool retreat long
enough to let the public have a rest.

Great was the surprise at the an-
nouncement of Charles Stewart Parnell’s
death. It was not known even that he
was sick, in fact he had been sick only a
few days. A chill came and with tragic
suddenness he was dead. When the
whole country was shocked to dumbness
by the death of Henry W. Grady, it was
on every lip that death had been unusu-
ally cruel to take him in the very begin-
ning of a career so brilliant that its future
fairly dazzled the imagination. Now it
is said what a pity that death should
come along and poftnee upon’ a victim, a
Hercules bound hand and foot by pas-
sion’s indiscretion; snuff out a life that
was just beginning to struggle for rein-
statement to the place of power and lead-
ership for which he .was so splendidly
fitted. A great strong man, marvelously
endowed, hia love for another’s wife
in the giving away to which he had
committed a crime too black for
words to portray, had carried him to the
very depths of humility and unpopu-
larity, and with him had gone the cause
for which he had so ably labored. There
is the pity, for had he lived he would
have risen again, and with him
the cause of a down-trodden people.
Americans feel keenly the loss of Par-
nell. He was half American, and in
his love of liberty wholly American.
Ireland’s loss can not be calculated, for
out of the factions and bitterness pro-
duced by Parnell’s downfall would have
come Parnell and a united people
with an imperishable cause sure of at-
tainment. But bent and distorted in
the pains of an awful’penance, Parnell
is called away, leaving as his only de-
fense the history he has made. But ’tis
enough. It is eloquent with a thousand
tongues, and though his crime was
black as hell itself, it is washed away
by all those years of faithful labor for
reland and her cause.

Queer Superstitions.
If you pay out money on Monday morn-
ing you will pay out money all the rest
of the week. It is unlucky to spill salt
at the table, and to rub a hunchback
will bring luck to any immediate project
you have in view. To leave the house
and then suddenly return to it is consid-
ered a bad omen. This is a very old su-
perstition, but a common one with us.
Laodamia refers to it in her letter to
Protesilaus, after he had left for the
Trojan war.
Some years ago I asked a neighbor to
haul a dead horse from the premises.
He declared that if he did so one of his
own horses would die within the year. |
I reasoned him out of the superstition
and he removed the horse. Strange to
say, one of the span of horses which he
used for the purpose died shortly after-
ward.—Philadelphia Ledger.
An Idea for a Cushion.
An idea for a cushion, which is merely
an elaboration of the covers made of
men’s white linen hemstitched handker-
chiefs, was seen in a suburban parlor re-
cently. A large sized plain black silk
muffler, with hemstitched border, had
been powdered all over with tiny “John-
ny jumpups,” their gay little faces worked
in purple and gold floss. The square was
then fitted on a cushion, whose lining
was gold silk, and the four corners had

J. M.BBOWM,
Killing an Artist’s Pet.
A little story is told of Du Maurier,
the well known artist of Punch, the
Englishman’s materialized idea of wit,
humor and burlesque. The artist lives
in a beautiful country home near Lon-
don, and one of his pet views is from his
study window across his own lawn out
beyond to the landscape surrounding
Harrow. An American, of America to
the west, recently visited him for a day,
and Mr. Du Maurier was showing his
guest about the place.
“There,” he said, coming to his favor-
ite window, “is the prettiest thing of
all. That is Harrow.”
The American looked out for a minute
or two.
“Harrow?” he said inquiringly.
“Yes,” repeated the artist, “Harrow.”
“Is that so?” questioned the visitor.
