Mini-Bazaar at
Perryton opens
The picnic welcome which
Canadian residents extended
to the passengers and crew on
the Santa Fe’s special train on
September 13 has brought a
number of enthusiastic thank-
you notes to the Canadian
Chamber of Commerce, which
organized the party.
Some excerpts.
‘"Thank you all for a perfect
example of genuine Texas
hospitality...There are towns
that talk about their com-
munity pride and there are
towns like Canadian, Texas,
that show it’ You should be
especially proud of being so
generous to so many of us that
were strangers. The ‘New York
Hot Dog servers’ were also a
nice touch. This Switchman
thanks the good folks of
Canadian again, and w’on’t
soon forget them.” — Ray T.
Cornelison, Douglass, Kan-
sas.
“Being a conductor on the
No. 375 that had the good for-
tune to stop in your town of
Canadian on September 13, I
want to thank you for your
hospitality to all our crew and
passengers on the train.
Everyone was congenial and
pleasant at the picnic, which
was well organized with great
food and drink. Since we had
traveled 215 miles, all were
ready for the entertainment
and food before boarding the
very memorable day.” — C.E.
Waller & Norma Waller,
Wellington, Kansas; Zac
Mathews and Drew Pick-
ens, Winfield, Kansas;
Nancy Colwell and Mack
and Erin Colwell, Wel-
lington, Kansas.
“My family and I would like
to thank you for the wonderful
time you showed us at the end
of our trip on No. 3751. The
picnic, band, and friendly
people were a welcome surprise
to all of us. Thank you for
making our wonderful trip just
a little extra special.” — Diane
Testerman & Family, New-
kirk, Oklahoma.
‘You have made me proud to
call Canadian my Home Town,
even though I have not lived in
Canadian in the last 38 years
There have been a lot of com-
ments and praise about the
reception and festivities that
were given the Santa Fe
employees from Amarillo and
Wellington, Kansas, who were
on the steam-powered train. I
did not get to make the trip on
September 13 because I was on
the train that ran on Septem-
ber 2, but hearing all of the
positive about my Home Town
assured me that Canadian was
a place to be proud of. — James
King, Class of’52, Amarillo.
Perryton’s third annual

The event is sponsored by
the Waka Women’s Fellowship
of the Waka Church of the

tension Homemakers.
busses for home.” — J.R. Fish.
“Thank you for the many
wonderful people for all their
hard work in preparing a meal
for us last Sunday after our
wonderful ride on the train. It
was a great pleasure for my
husband as he had worked on
the old 3751 when it was in
sendee...Our son-in-law Perry
Wiley- was the engineer on the
diesel that was with the steam
engine...it was a trip we will
never forget, and your grand
community made it extra spe-
cial.” — Raymond and Clara
Stonebocker. Wellington,
Kansas.
“Just a line to thank you for
the lunch you sensed to us when
we arrived on the train. It was
very much appreciated. W’e
know that probably several or-
ganizations were involved but
don’t know which ones so
please express our appreciation
to them. It was such a nice
thing to do. My husband has
retired after 35 years as a
locomotive engineer on Santa
Fe. Started on steam engines.
— Buddy and Virginia Dick,
Belle Plains, Kansas.
“My family and I wish to
thank the people of Canadian
for your hospitality. The picnic
your town provided was a
wonderful end to the train ride.
Your community is to be com-
mended for its caring attitude.
More communities could learn
fromyour town.”—Jim & Kris
Ellis, Wellington, Kansas.
“What a nice gesture you
showed to us by providing our
lunch. We had a great day, one
we will always remember...My
husband was an engineer on
the diesel and I rode with my
81-year old father who worked
on that steam engine many
times. — Mrs. P.H. Wiley,
Wellington, Kansas.
“This is a small note of
thanks for your kind provision
at the end of our steam train
ride on the 3751. The band and
the picnic were so thought-
ful...the home-made cookies
were most touching, as we real-
ize the time and effort put forth
to make and bring them...espe-
cially enough for our size group
<350 to 400). You provided a
most wonderful ending to a
