extra-point kick made it 14-0
with 8:42 left in the half.
That ended the sconng, and
the game settled in to become a

teams kicking three times, and

Canadian’s Wildcats cleared
another big hurdle Friday
night at Panhandle when they
upset the Panhandle Panthers
with a 14-0 shut-out.
The Wildcats opened the
conference season this year
facing the defending champion
and runner-up teams from the
1991 season, Wellington and
Panhandle, on successive
week-ends, and have now'
defeated both of them decisive-
ly.
Their victory Friday night
over the Panthers was won in
the first half with touchdowns
in the first and second periods
for a 14-0 half time lead, but it
was the Wildcat defense that
dominated the football game.
The Panthers were shut down
tight, both on the ground and in
the ai-, by a hard-hitting
defense which held the Panther
attack to a net gain of 24 yards
rushing, allowed only 58 yards
passing, and intercepted two
Panther passes at strategic in-
tervals.
The Panhandle gridders
never mounted a serious scor-
ing threat after the first
quarter, and were contained
most of the game deep in their
own territory.
The Wildcats scored early in
the opening period, kicking off
to the Panthers and forcing a
punt to midfield after holding
fast on the first three offensive
plays.
Taking over at the Pan-
handle 47 yard line, the
Wildcats struck swiftly, with a
pass from Kevin VanWinkle to
J.K. Hester, a 9-yard run by
Steven Flowers to the 1 yard
line and a dive by Flowers from
the 1 for the touchdown, and a
kick for conversion making it
7-0 before the game was four
minutes old.
The Panthers took to the air
after an exchange of kicks, and
mounted their only scoring
threat of the ball game, hitting
a 30-yard pass from Brady
Shadid to Jamie Rocha and
another for 8 yards to Rocha
and, aided by a penalty,
reached a first down at the
Canadian 21, their deepest
penetration of the game, before
a pass to Heath Haseloff was
fumbled at the Canadian 9 yard

fourth period, holding the Pan-
thers to a net loss of 22 yards
rushing and gave up only 15
yards to a pair of short passes.
The Wildcats threatened twice
in the closing minutes, reach-
ing the Panhandle 19 yard line
before being held, and attack-
ing again after Trent Butcher
intercepted a Panther pass at
the 27 yard line and drove to
the Panther 9 yard line before
the Panther defenses braced
and held.
Kevin VanWinkle took over
the quarterbacking, relieving
Steven Flowers for running
back duties. Both Panhandle
and Canadian teams were ef-
fective on defense, although the
Wildcats held a decisive edge,
especially in the kicking game.
The Wildcats averaged 34
yards on seven kicks, the Pan-
thers kicked ten times and
averaged 23.
The game was played in per-
fect football weather, clear and
cold with almost no wind. The
Wildcats made 11 first downs to
5 for the Panthers, and had a
4-1 edge in penetrations.
The Wildcats had 75 yards
rushing and 109 passing, com-
pleting 11 of 15 passes with no
interceptions. Panhandle com-
pleted five of 15 passes for 58
yards and two interceptions,
and had 24 net yards rushing.
