In April, the Wheeler Track Meet is scheduled for the 2nd and
3rd, with an open date on the 9th and 10th, leading up to the
District Track Meet at Panhandle on April 16-17. Regionals take
place at Abilene April 30-May 1, and State competition will be in
Austin on May 14-15.

Junior Varsity tennis teams played at Booker Tuesday, taking
17 games to Booker’s 10.
In boys’ singles matches, Jeremi Young won 8-3, Kevin Flowers
8-1, Trey Kerrigan 8-1 and Trent Ezzell 8-3. Caleb Heatwole ended
his matches 7-9 against Hoover, and 4-6 against Butler. Eric
Garvin was 0-8.
The going was a little rougher for girls’ singles. Amy Carr won
one match-up 8-3, and lost another 2-6. Myrlah Jaco and Tammy
‘Russell each lost their matches 2-8 and 2-6 respectively.
The doubles’competition put Canadian in the win column with
4 wins out of 6 for the boys, and 8 wins out of 10 for the girls.
Doubles players Brian Kelley and Trey Kerrigan came out well
ahead, winning 8 of 9 sets, and the team of April Maupin and Kristi
Cook took 8 straight sets against Booker’s pair of Booth/Longhofer.
Other winning pairs were Brian Kelley/Monte Barnett 8-5, Eric
Morris/Blaine Bivins 8-4 and Barnett/Trent Ezzell 6-4 in boys’
doubles. Kevin Flowers/Jyarid Jaco lost 2-8, and Jaco/Eric Garvin
lost 6-8. Other girls’ winning doubles were Amy PurcelVJennifer
Schluterman 6-5 and 5-4 in their two match-ups, Schluter-
man/Maupin 8-4. Purcell/Maupin 5-4, Christi Campbell/Cook 8-3
and-8<<in two matches, and Bentley/Yarnold 8-6.
Jayvee netters will compete against Gruver here next Tuesday
afternoon starting at 4.

CHS Tennis coach John Hiemstra reports promising performan-
ces by Canadian netters in their first tournament against the
Pampa Harvesters last Friday. Final team totals—on games which
were played under cold, windy conditions—were Canadian 13,
Pampa 4.
In boys’ singles competition, Nick Hiemstra defeated Pampa’s
Lanny Schale in 8-0 in straight sets; Jeremy Harper took 8 sets to
Jason Laramore’s 2; Joe Hiemstra outplayed David Kludt 8-6; Neil
Baileys went 8-2 against Matt Rheams; Jeremi Young won 8 sets
to Ty Newman’s 3; Kevin Flowers took on Ryan Morris for an 8-3
win, and Eric Garvin defeated Matt Rheams 8-7. In other games,
Cole Patton was defeated by Cory Griggs 5-8 and Toby Lankford
was outscored by Ryan Morris 6-8.
The Canadian girls team won all three of their matches, with
Amy Hunt taking 8 sets to Catarina Campos’ 4, Courtney Lovelace
8 to Christy Hooven’s 6, and Myrlah Jaco beating Amanda Brown
6-3.
Boys’ doubles were a near-sweep, with Baileys/Paiton winning
8-4 against Schale/Rheames and Garvin/Brian Kelley beating
Griggs/Newman 8-2. Jeremy Harper/Joe Hiemstra teamed up for
a 5-8 loss to Kludt/Laramore.
The Canadian girls won three of their doubles games, with
Brandy Jahnel/Misty Risley pairing against Campos/Hoover for an
8-1 win and the team of Tisha Carr/Jenny White winning two
match-ups, the first an 8-3 win against Noles/Grabato, and the
second against Campos/Hoover, winning 6-2. Jaco/April Maupin
were defeated by Noles/Grabato 6-8.
CHS netters will compete next at the Plainview Tennis Tourna-
ment this Friday and Saturday.

Five members of the Canadian High School varsity basketball
teams were named to 2-AA All-District teams this week. Wildcats
J.K. Hester (Senior-Guard) and Blaine Bivins (Sophomore-For-
ward), and Lady Cats Myrlah Jaco (Senior-Forward) and Misty
Risley (Senior-Post) were all named to We team. In addition, Nick
Hiemstra (Senior-Forward), who was injured earlier and played in
only one game this season, was recognized as an honorary member
of the All-District Team.
Canadian also garnered two Honorable Mentions on the
teams—Senior Guard Chris Lee and Junior Forward Veronica
Armendariz.
Other players on the boys’ All-District roster are MVP Larry
Johnson and Jason Hughes of Memphis, Billy Wilson and D.
McCampbell of Clarendon, Henry Outley, Clifton Burns and Doug
Daniel of Wellington, J.D. Ledbetter of Wheeler, and Panhandle’s
J. D. Ledbetter and Jeremy Neush.
Panhandle dominated the girls’ All-District list with five
players—MVP Angie Ogletree, Tammy Stewart, Jennifer Brown
and Stacy Bertrand and Kary Reddinefield. Also named to the
team were Wellington’s Brandy Mindi Watts and Cherrell
Shrubs, Angie Kepley of Clarendon, and Misty Glassey of Wheeler.
The selections were made by coaches of District 2-AA at the end
of the regular season, but were not released until Panhandle girls
and Memphis boys were eliminated from the play-offs.
CHS Coach David Flowers’golf teams competed in the Memphis
Cyclone Golf Tournament this Monday and Tuesday.
Of ten teams participating in the girls’ tournament, Canadian
placed 5th. Stephanie Briggs lead her team with a 102, Amy
Loworn shot 114. Penny Lyons 115, Becky Lee 116 and Jill Hobdy
123.
The Canadian boys’ team competed against 11 other teams,
placing 8th overall. Colby Leach led the team with 86, Bryan King
followed with 93, Jerrod Billenwillms shot 96 and Warren Mc-
Neeley 99.
The golf teams will compete next at Wellington on March 15th
and 16th.
Unless predictions of winte#'orrB-for this weekend are ac-
curate, the track season should open this Friday and Saturday
with the annual Canadian High School Track Meet.
Middle School running preliminaries will kick off the two-day
event Friday afternoon with 100-meter hurdles from 4-4:30, 100-
meter dash from 4:30-4:55, 400-meter dash from 4:55-5:20, 200-
meter hurdles 5:20-5:40, and the 200-meter dash from 5:40-6 p.m.
The last running event of the day will be Jayvee and Varsity boys
and girls finals in the 3200-meter run.
Field events will begin at 3:15 Friday with Jayvee boys pole
vault and long jump. Varsity boys shot (in the west ring) and high
jump, and Varsity girls discus and triplejump. At 4:15, Jayvee boys
will compete in discus, high jump and triple jump, Varsity boys in
pole vault and long jump, and Varsity girls in the shot put. Closing
out field events for the day, starting at 5:15, will be the Jayvee boys
shot put, Varsity boys discus andWHpl'lump, and Varsity girls high
jump and longjump.
Events resume at 9:00 Saturday morning, starting with Middle
School field events. 7th-grade boys will compete in pole vault and
discus starting at 9 a.m., shot (in the west ring) and high jump at
10, triple jump at 11 and longjump at noon. 8th grade boys will
start with shot (in the west ring) and high jump at 9, continuing
with pole vault and discus at 10. longjump at 11, and triple jump
at noon. 7th-grade girls will begin with longjump at 9, shot (east
ring) and triple jump at 10, discus at 11 and high jump at 12.
8th-grade girls compete in shot (east ring) and triple jump at 9,
longjump at 10, high jump at 11 and discus at noon.
Saturday afternoon at 1, the running finals begin, starting out
with 400-meter relay and 800-meter run in all divisions. Girls
100-meter hurdles follow, then 7th/8th 110-meter intermediate
hurdles, Jayvee/Varsitv boys lO^etW high hurdles, all divisions
of the 100-meter dash, 800-meter relay for 7th/8th and Varsity
girls, and all divisions of boys and girls 400-meter dash.
The 200-meter low hurdles f< r 7th/8th grades will follow, after
which are 300-meter low hurdles for Varsity girls, 300-meter
intermediate hurdles for Jayvee and Varsity boys, all divisions of
the 200-meter dash, 7th/8th grade 1200-meter run, Jayvee boys
and Varsity 1500-meter run, and 1600-meter relay in all divisions.
Presentation of relay and team championship trophies will end
the day after all finals have been completed.
Schools expected to participate in the meet are Sanford-Fritch.
Wellington, Spearman. Perryton. Wheeler and West Texas.
