I got this router for Christmas, can’t remember how long ago.
Maybe ten or twenty years. It’s brand new. still in the factory box.
I never used it. I’m scared of it. The label says it’s a Black & Decker
1-1/2 horsepower, and that’s good. The label also says it turns up
25,000 RPM. That thing could nip off a man’s finger or two and he’d
never know it until the next day.
Twenty five thousand revolutions per minute. Man, I got high
caliber rifles not that fast. I plugged it in and turned it on one time
just to see what it was like. It sounded like no other shop tool I ever
turned on. It sounded like 25,000 RPM alright. I switched the thing
off and stood back a pace. Admitted the thing scared me but figured
I would get over it I never did.
I use power tools in my shop all the time. Old ones, familiar
friends, some cut metal, some drill wood, none of them carry on at
the speed of that router. I’ve had them most of my life, none of them

AUSTIN - President Clinton won
some nods from sage heads in
Texas last week when he an-
nounced, with Texas Comptroller
John Sharp at this side, a top-to-
bottom audit of federal government
modeled after Texas’.
Sharp won praises here in ’91
with his waste-finding audits of
state agencies; now, fittingly, he’s
hit the big time.
Those ’91 audits, make no mis-
take, are perhaps the prime reason
why the Texas legislative leader-
ship feels comfortable it can adopt
a budget this session with no new
taxes.
That, and the unmistakable pub-
lic roar for reduced waste in gov-
ernment.
Sharp, standing at the president’s
side, is a man who is where he

Clinton Boosts Krueger
Clinton also pumped hard for
interim Sen. Bob Krueger, facing
a May 1 special election; that same
day, reports surfaced that Krueger’s
’84 Senate campaign suffered an
IRS lien for unpaid unemployment
insurance taxes, now paid.
Dropout Bill Passes Senate
The Senate last week passed a
bill by Rep. Gonzalo Barrientos,
D-Austin, drafted to help reduce
the school dropout rate. The bill
would:
• Give school districts funds
to help students who are at risk
of dropping out because they are
pregnant or are school-age parents.
• Provide money for districts
to administer high school equiva-
lency examination programs target-
ing students who are 16 or older
and are not expected to graduate.
• Require the Texas Department
of Health to notify the state ed-
ucation commissioner of births to
school-age mothers.

have ever drawn blood. They just sit up on the workbench looking
old and faithful and always do what I expect them to. I have e''en
learned to sharpen twist drills on the bench grinder stone by hand.
Not all mechanics can do that. If you make more than one pass
for each side you’ve messed it up and the bit will drill funny. But I
can sharpen from the smallest drills up to half inch metal cutting
drills and they cut true. You have to study the bit awhile before
you introduce it gently to the stone. And you have to be Right with
the Lord.
That router came with a real nice table. I use that a lot, mount
my portable electric hand saw into it for long cuts or angle cuts.
Lots of noise and sawdust blowing, but all of it within reason.
Nothing cutting at two thousand five hundred rpm. I bet that’s
faster than a jet fighter plane.
I had envisioned the router as a nice old man’s tool. Cut my
name in a nice piece of wood, label things with the lettering routed
right out of solid wood. And a router will cut a fancy edge on a piece
of wood or allow a man to put real craftsmanship into corner joints.
I just don’t have the guts to turn it on again. Really upgrade my
woodworking which is limited to a miter box now.
I’ve been real ashamed about this business with the router. A
little bigger than a pound can of coffee, good solid handles on each
side. Just reading the instructions scared me enough and I’ve lost
them now. I never lose instructions. One day I admitted this to my
friend and confidant, old Byrnes Belk. He said he had a brand new
router too, is scared of it. I mentioned this to long time family
counselor-woodwork!ng hobbyist Bernard Giarratano. Bernado is
scared of his router too. That helps some.

State Republicans have formed a
coalition to work against passage
of the Robin Hood School finance
reform amendment.
They claim Gov. Richards and
other Democrats are trying to
blackmail voters into approving the
amendment on die May 1 ballot
with a threat that a Democrat state
to the smooth leadership under district judge will close all public
schools if they don’t.
State Rep. John Culberson, R-
Houston, urged Houston voters to
dump the amendment, saying there
still will be plenty of time for the
Legislature to resolve funding in a
less expensive way.
Republicans are warning that if
the amendment is approved before
a spending plan is outlined, then
voters will have less control over
the eventual price tag of school
reform.
