\lto City Councilmen Marshall Bynum and James Grammer begin
decorating this large Christmas tree for the City of Alto. The tree,
lighted with more than 300 colored lights, will stand at the intersection
of I’.S. Highway 69 at the red light to be enjoyed by local and travelers
during the holiday season \lto will officially welcome the Christmas
season at 3:30 p.m. today when the Alto Lions Club sponsors the

later than usual due to a PTA
program to be held at 7 p m.
An agenda for the meeting is
expected to be finalized next Monday
Trustees of the AISD, met in special
session Friday night in the office of
Supt Harold Ramm and approved the
sale of the lunch room building on the
old school campus
A bid of $900 by Ralph Lindsey was
accepted The building will be tom
down and moved from the campus it
was purchased for the materials.

The Alto Independent School
District has collected approximately
$100,000 in taxes. Mrs Shirley Babb,
assessor-collector, reported Monday
Collections are slow as compared
with last year. Mrs Babb said
Total assessed value of property in
the district is about $50 million, with
taxes assessed amounting to $579,000
The deadline for paying 1979 taxes
without a penalty is January 31 There
is no discount for early payment
The dedication of an Official Texas
Historical Marker at the Selman-
Roark Cemetery in the Linwood Com-
munity, five mites east of Alto on
State Highway 21, is scheduled tor
Saturday, December 15, at 2 p m
The old cemetery is the burial place

Alto Independent School District
will dismiss classes at 2 p m on
December 14 for the Christmas
holidays and resume class work on
January 2
In some of the classes, the last 45
minutes will be set aside for parties
The drama class at Alto High School
will present plays on the morning of
December 14 and a Christmas concert
will be presented at the high school
and junior high during the afternoon
The Alto Elementary School
Parent-Teacher Association will meet
at 7 p.m., Dec 13 in the school
gymnasium
Pupils of the fourth, fifth and sixth
grades will present a Christmas
program
Sounds of Christmas will fill the air
at 6:30 p m. Monday, Dec 10 when the
Wells Elementary School presents its
annual Christmas program in the
school auditorium
The program is under the direction
of Cheryl Skipper, fourth grade
teacher, and R A Wallace, school
prinicpal The public is invited to
attend the performance and there is
no charge
The Head Start Class will open the
program singing “Ding Dong” and
“Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.” Head
Start teachers are Nancy Seymore
and Tammy Hope
Kindergarten, directed by Jana
Hunt, will offer their version of
“Jingle Bells" and the first grade,
directed by Bea Glover, will sing
“Rudolph.”
They will be followed by Mary
McBryde’s second graders singing "O
Christmas Tree," and the third grade,
under the direction of Verna Young
and Gayle Fuller, singing "Are My
Ears on Straight?" and “The Hole in
the Ground ”
A public hearing was held by the
Alto City Council at 5:30 pm Monday
in regard to the city’s application for a
sewerage facilities construction grant
from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency
Interest in the hearing, however,
was lacking, since no one attended to
hear details of the application.
The city is in the process of applying
for the grant to be used in updating
the sewer system with new
construction
Discussion was held on financing
the purchase of a new fire truck with
warrants from the Continental State
Bank of Alto in the amount of $41,250
for 15 years at 6.9 per cent interest.
.The city will proceed by publishing
its intent to issue certificates of
obligation not to exceed $50,000 for a
time period not to exceed 20 years
As is customary, the City Council
voted Christmas bonuses to city
employees
Repair of streets also was discussed
but plans for major repairs will be
finalized later
The next meeting of the council will
be held at 8am on December 21
Other songs include “Up On the
House Top" by kindergarten, “Frosty
the Snowman” by first grade and
"Silver Bells" by second grade
The fourth, fifth and sixth grades
will combine to present "The
Christmas Story.” The cast includes
Mary, Julie Morris; Joseph, Robbie
Rosenberger; kings. Jason Hopper.
Michael Hathorn and Mitchell
Hathorn; angels, Dena Pitts, Mary
Jackson, Jana Doss. Theresa Hodges.
Karen Hicks, Sharon Argumon,
Rebecca Hartless and Lisa Floyd and
shepherds. Brian Smith, Jed Morris,

Wells Superintendent of Schools
John Fuller will give the welcome and
the offertory Money collected will go
toward helping needy families and
shut-ins in the community

Alto will present the Christmas
cantata, "Carol of Christmas,” at 6

Narration for the cantata will be
given by Mrs Grace Hall Music
accompaniment will be provided by
Mrs Frances Johnson at the organ
and Mrs Cynthia Johnson at the
piano The choir is directed by Mrs
Marcia Hassell
The cantata, written by John W
JJeterson, includes familiar carols
such as "O Come All Ye Faithful,"
“Silent Night," “While Shepherds
Watched Their Flocks by Night" and
“Angels We Have Heard on High ’’
Soloists for the evening include
Virginia Low singing “Away In A
Manger," and Jodi Grammer singing
"O Holy Night.’’

The men’s trio consisting of Fred
Wallace, Jim Moses and Hardy Low
will sing “We Three Kings of Orient

the musical program
The public is invited to attend and
enjoy an evening of Christmas muaic
The Senior Class of Alto High School
will sponsor a dance in the Cafetonum
Friday. Dec. 7. It will begin at 7:30
p m and continue until 11:30 p.m The

Admission will be $1 per person and
$1 50 for couples Various kinds of
music will be played and
refreshments will be available

available to be filled in, cut out and
deposited in the store named on the
coupon, to make the reader eligible

Turner has been a practicing
attorney in Crockett since 1973. He
attended The University of Texas
where he recieved a bachelor’s and
master’s degree, as well as a degree
from the School of Law He also
served two years in the U.S. Army.
While in school at Austin, he was
employed in the capitol as a
legislative assistant, worked in the
Governor’s office and the Attorney
General’s office.

Representative for District 15 has
drawn at least two announced
candidates Crockett’s Tommy
Driskell was joined Wednesday by
another from that city, Jimmy
Turner, in an announcement of intent
District 15 is composed of Cherokee,
Houston, Leon and Limestone
counties, an area which is served by
Rep Emmett H. Whitehead of Rusk
Driskell is the mayor of Crockett
and Turner is its city attorney.
Voters of Cherokee County will elect
a wide range of officials next year
which include the state
representative’s post, along with
sheriff, district attorney, district
judge, commissioners of precincts
one and three, also the president of
the U.S.
Primaries will be held May 3 and
June 7. The General Election is
scheduled for Nov 4. Persons who are
not registered to vote must do so 30
days prior to the date of the election in
which they intend to Vote This may be
done at the office of the Cherokee
County Tax Assessor Collector in the
Courthouse at Rusk, or the sub-office
in Jacksonville
In an interview Monday afternoon.
Turner announced “1 am not running
against Mr. Whitehead. I am
running for the office he holds ”
He expressed the opinion that all
persons who are qualified should
serve. Turner said that he feels a
concern and has a desire to serve He
says this is the first office he has
sought except those he held in school
He promised to actively represent the
best interests of the people indicating
that the next session of the legislature
will provide challenges to rural
interests of the state.
