E.M. BAI LE Y SKILL EyQO S/11/ NTIG*ITY ORchard 2-3754 - BOX 2119 - ABILENE, TEXAS March 24, 1961 Mr. Truett Latimer House of Representatives Capitol Station Austin, Texas Dear Truett: For some reason H. B. #84 has been unable to get a date for hearing before the committee. We favor this bill and hope you will us- your influence in getting it passed. Also, I don't remember the name or number, but please do not let a bill get started similiar to the one that was introduced calling for the 5% tax on highway contractors. This would only run highway costs up and transfer the money to other purposes. We favor a strong highway program for two reasons. First, we make our living that way and, second, the facts prove the only st-tes that continue to grow and develop are the ones that have an adequate highway program. It was my intention to call you last week whil- I was there, but I just never got around to it. I think we favor a broad based sales tax. I wish I knew more about all of this, but I just do not. The work you are doing is appreciated by us very much. Sincerely yours, K& l Bob Bat ey FB
