czbine puuir filol A. E. WELLS, SUPERINTENDENT P. O. BOX 981 cilene, Texas January 26, 1961 The Honorable Tr uett Latimer House of Repres entative s Austin, Texas Dear Truett: The State of Texas has a number of special laws regarding the election of school board members. Some of them are based upon population figures. Since our last census gives Abilene more than 75, 000 population, our school board members. will be elected for a six year term instead of a three year term. About the only disadvantage I can see to this law will be the hesitancy on the part of a prospective board member thinking he will have to serve a term of six year s if he is elected. . That seems a long time to some individual when you tell them we want you to serve on the school board for the next six years. However, I think the advantages of this law will outweigh the objections some people might have to it. Most school board members are more valuable to the school district during their second term than they were the first term. It takes about two or three ye ar s to really educate a board member about the many different facets of the school to a point where he can give his maximum service. Many people hesitate to get on the board because they do not want to r un for the office. . They think-r unning for a school board will get them into politics. I think this new law will help in this respect in that their election will only be every six year s.
