National F.H.A. Week, March 27
through April 2. will be observed
by 600,000 high school youth across
the nation who are members of
the Future Homemakers of Amer-
ica.
This national youth organization
of home economics students in
junior and senior high schools
provides opportunities for deve-
loping Individual and group Initia-
tive in planning and carrying out
activities related to the science of
homemaking.
According to Mrs. Tom Newsom,
FHA Chapter Advisor, the FHA
Chapter in Mt. Vernon has arrang-
ed a busy schedule of activities In
observance of National FHA Week.
These activities, she said, are de-
signed to focus public attention
on the objectives and accomplish-
ments of FHA In meeting the re-
sponsibilities of today and pre-
paring for the challenges of tomor-
row.
Under the supervision of Mrs.
Newsom, these young people car-
ry out a program of work design-
ed to Improve personal, family
and communit/ living. The pro'
gram Includes nine major pro-
jects under the headings of: In-i
dlvtduallty Counts; Good Health-
A Valuable Asset; Jobs, Careers,
and You; Morals and
Matter; Good Family

Meet March 19
Twenty-five percent of the local
F.H.A. Chapter attended the Area
VI F.H.A. Meeting held at East
Texas State University at Com-
merce on Saturday, March 19. The
Theme for the meeting was
•'F.H.A.-Jewel For Personal Deve-
lopment.” 1
While the House of Delegates
was in session, entertainment by
the F.H.A. talent numbers was
presented to the girls.
The morning session of the
meeting consisted of presentation
of colors by the Air Force ROTC
of E.T.S. University, greet-
ings, response, introduction of of-
ficers, guests and degree candi-
dates and a skit on the National
Program of Work for 1965-1969
by the area officers.
Preceding the afternoon session,
a local quartet composed of Bar-
bara Griffith, Janie Long, Teresa
Puckett and Nila Solomon, ac-
companied by Mary Beth Newsom,
sang “Who Can I Turn To.”
After a devotional by the New
Boston Chapters, Ann Randall,
fashion advisor for Neiman Mar-
cus, presented an Illustrated lec-
ture on "Fashions For ’Hie Teen-
ager." After the business session
and the installation of incoming
officers, the meeting was adjourn-
ed.
Following the adjournment of
the meeting, Mary Beth Newsom
was chosen as third delegate for
six sopranos to be in the State
Chorus at the FHA Meeting to
be held In San Antonio, April 28
and 29.
