It was privilege to talk about newspapers before a group

I told them about the great ideals held by journalists, how
newspapers have such lofty goals as telling “the truth and
nothing but the truth”, etc., etc.
It was meant to be a medium-heavy dissertation along the
lines of freedom of the press. I had a captive audience and I
enjoyed it. Some of the kids did, too.
I know they liked it because one of them told me so:
“Thanks for taking up our time out of regular class,” he said.

ONE INTERESTING question did come up afterwards,
when an almost-timid girl asked me: “Can girls get to be
editors?”
The question hadn’t occured to me and I didn’t talk about
it during my presentation. But it’s a valid question,
especially considering all the talk in the last few years about
equal rights for women.
As a matter of fact there are many women in the
newspaper business and many of them are editors.
I’ll have to admit that they weren’t given equal
treatment in the past, though, and some good women
journalists were given jobs that weren’t too important.
Things are changing for the better, however, and women
have great opportunities in the various fields of journalism.
The job market right now isn’t too good for male or female
journalists since there are more graduates in the field than
there are jobs available.
But women are being placed in more responsible positions.
One women I do not know personnally currently is a •
newscaster on a Dallas TV. In fact there are two who are
very popular with viewers, and one of them is black.
Then there is the former Miss America from Texas who

Speeches at open houses and dedications
are normally routine, but we detected
particular significance in an address by
Mayor Frank Norwood Sunday during
ceremonies marking the official opening of
the expanded Burleson Police Department
headquarters.
Mayor Norwood spoke of the need for
continued cooperation between citizens and
police and of continued support for law and
law enforcement. Such remarks were
expected.
But he also made some pertinent remarks
about progress of the city as a whole and
the positive ingredients which are neces-
sary to insure better things to come.
While on the subject of community pride,
he put in some good words for the city
council and the city administration.
“Something good is going on in Burle-
son,” he said.
To back up his positive attitude, he
mentioned several steps which have been
taken to insure orderly development of the
community including an extensive traffic
safety survey being planned, improved
relations with other area cities and agencies
such as the North Central Texas Council of
Governments, zoning and subdivision regu-
lations which are being updated, successful
use of federal funds to help with salaries of
key employees and to obtain needed capital
improvements (the police department ex-
pansion was accomplished through federal
revenue sharing funds, for example), the
planned reconstruction of a section of
Renfro Street through a state-federal
program, and other signs which show
Burleson’s situation is a healthy one.

He stressed the significance of growth in
local churches, the work being done on a
new medical center just north of the city,
“first rate schools”, and the “great quality
of life” which Burleson citizens enjoy.
He also noted that the city is “comfort-
ably in the black due to a conservative city
council and an active administration”.
His remarks about the administration
were particularly significant, we thought, in
light of recent criticism of the city’s top
administrator by some members of the city
council.
The city manager and his staff are
responsible for the “blunt of the. work”, he
said, explaining that the city council sets
policies and the manager is responsible for
getting the work done under those policies.
“Too often we fail to indicate how much
we appreciate them,” he said in reference to
City Manager Ron Harmon and his staff as
well as city employees.
Without saying so directly, he seemed to
be urging the city council and the city
manager to resolve whatever differences
they might have and get on with the job of
making Burleson “the best city in the
country”.
His was a low-key approach to harmony,
in our estimation, but he made his point
well, and his goal is a worthy one.
Burleson has too much to gain through
unity to have problems magnified by
disharmony.
We have many reasons to be proud of our
community. Dwelling on past problems will
only detract from accomplishments which
have been made and which can be made
with all factions pulling together.

national football broadcasts.
It is a sign of changing times, and I think it is a change for
the better.
I disagree with some federal programs that require
gets is from the companies to hire a certain quota of minorities whether they
be women or blacks or browns.
But I believe there are a number of women and blacks and '
browns who do better jobs in their fields than men, white or
any color.
It also seems interesting to me that the ladied are winning
acceptance because of their talent, not because their
employers were coerced into hiring them.
All the facts are not in and society hasn’t yet judged
correctly whether the equality movement has been the
cause of improved conditions for minorities. I think the proof
will come for women journalists when their employers have
the statistics to show hiring them was profitable.
Money is green, a color not linked with any minority
