CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS—Christmas
takes on special meaning at the Dud Ward,
home as Pat m&kes special decorations. Here,
she holds a pair of urchins that make up her
set of carolers. She made a boy and girl urchin
and then a sophisticated couple using large
cold drink bottles for the base. In the back-
ground is a centerpiece, Santa and his rein-
deer made of gingerbread.
IN SUNNY KITCHEN—Pat Ward, pictured in
her brightly decorated kitchen, holds a sample
of her handcraft of bread dough. Pat painted
her kitchen cabinets yellow and thai hand-
painted white daisies for decoration. Her
friends teased her husband Dud while this
project was underway, "You better not stand
still, she will paint a daisy on you."
Pat Ward Makes Decorations
That Are Pretty Enough to Eat
By Barbara Craig
When someone exclaims
"That is pretty enough to
eat" when seeing a table
decoration done by Pat Ward,
more than likely they could
do just that. This was the case
with the Turkey Cake that she
made for Thanksgiving and
now the Santa Claus and his
reindeer made of ginger-
bread cookies for Christmas.
Both are edible.
Pat is getting recognition
for her talents and interests
as she has been a guest on the
Natalee Powers Show on at
least three occasions and
plans are for her to be a
regular guest at least once
each month during 1977 'Her

next performance is Jan. 24.
The Turkey Cake was
presented on the television
show and was used on several
occasions before being
carefully packed in the
freezer.
The Santa Claus and
Reindeer centerpiece made
of gingerbread cookies was
also the subject of a television
show.
Pat's creativeness is not
limited to edible cen-
terpieces; her home is filled
with many decorating ideas
that are original. She enjoys
doing her own interior
decorating and sewing, in
addition to crafts. She
designs and makes her own
clothes and men's wear for
her husband and sons.
Her husband Dud a former
employee of Brown and Root,
has been maintenance man at
Aspermont Schools for about
four years The sots are Tim,
22. who is employed at the
University of Texas at Austin
student financial aid office,
and Teddy, 18. a 1976
graduate of Aspermont High
School, who is employed by
Ned Ward Gulf Distributor.
She has made sport coats
for the men which were her
own design A special project
was to make sport coats and
vests from the good parts of
old Levi's for her sons
Pat enjoys creating and
expressing her own ideas.
She makes her own patterns
in sewing as well as in baking
special creations
She has always been in-
terested in arts and crafts but
did not have the time until her
retirement from the Post
Office in 1971 After four
major surgeries, she retired
on physical disability.
Her projects are not done of
expensive materials, rather,
she uses what is already
available and adds to it to
creat something beautiful
without being expensive.
Her Gingerbread Santa is
made from a recipe in the
Ladies Home Journal about
two years ago, she said. It is
suggested that three batches
of the gingerbread be made to
have enough for the Sai;:a
and reindeer. Pat says to
make extra reindeer because
they are fragile and may
need to be replaced. She cuts
her own patterns for the
figures and decorates each
part of the centerpiece using
decorative icing colored to
the right shade. A small
artist's brush is used to
outline the features of the
reindeer with the dark icing
mixture.
She uses this recipe for the
gingerbread dough.
